This is a product design brief for a high-end beverage juice product. The brief contains information on the material recommended for the primary packaging, the function of the material, the advantages and disadvantages associated with the material and the recommended printing method as well as environmental concern. In addition, the paper also focuses on secondary packaging, recommendations of the material for secondary package, recommended print methods and environmental concerns.
Functions of the Primary Package
The primary package is what comes in direct contact with the product. The primary package is be made to contain the required quantity of the product. For instance, one pack of juice is 8 ounces. The packaging must be free from leaks and provide protection for the product against hazards and during transportation. The package should be compatible with the product it contains and able to safeguard against degradation, microbial contamination and evaporation. It should also be conducive for dispensation, reuse, and recycling. Other than the above functions, the packaging material should be printable on the outside, and attractive to potential consumers.
Recommendation for the Material
The material used for the packaging should be a combination of flexible plastics, aluminum lining and paper called aseptic. Aseptic material is commonly used in packaging of high-end liquid food products such as milk and juice. This material is also conducive for products that are required in sterilized containers.
Aseptic is advantageous; it is lightweight and offer strength in containing the product, making transportation less strenuous. The weight of the product is considerable compared to that of the aseptic container. It cost less as compared to other packaging materials such as tin and plastic. In addition, aseptic offer the product extended shelf life at normal temperatures without need for refrigeration. It is attractive and normally used in packaging high end products. Nonetheless, aseptic material is recyclable.
On the other hand, aseptic packaging material has some associated disadvantages. The chemicals and heated chlorinated water used in the sterilization process have the potential of creating toxic and carcinogenic compounds that are difficult to dispose. These toxins are harmful to human beings. In addition handling aseptic after packaging, needs extra care, the packaging is of lightweight and can easily break and spill the contents.
Printing
The flexographic printing method is highly recommended for printing of the aseptic as a primary package material. This method provides best graphic arts for the aseptic material outlining clear wording and images.
This method of printing is recommended because it is fast and can print large volumes making it economical and acceptable over other printing processes. Additionally, it coats, laminates and prints allowing nine colors to be used per print job. It can print a wide variety of inks including fluorescent and metallic. The photopolymer plates used in this method are able to withstand several different impressions.
The basic assumption in choosing this packaging material and the printing method is that the product display will equal the expected branding and class. Most of the juices on the shelves are aseptic and this packaging will be a good match in the market. The printing will as well enhance the display giving it an edge over the other products.
Environmental Concerns
According to Nelson (2012), aseptic packaging is easily recyclable into various by products like writing paper and paper towels and the packages. However, the chemicals and chlorinated water used in the packaging process is not safe and not easily disposable creating widespread pollution. Therefore, necessary precautions should be taken during the packaging of the product.
Functions Served Secondary Packaging
The secondary package is what contains the primary packages. Here, the secondary packaging contains 12 packs of primary packaging ( 8 ounces of juice in aseptic package). It helps protect the primary packaging against damage during loading, transportation, off loading and storage. The secondary package provides information to the potential buyers because it advertises what it contains.
Recommendation for the Material
Due to the nature of the products, a carton box (paper) is very efficient during their handling and transportation from the manufacturer to the retailers. Preferably, rectangular shaped would be adequate because it would help reduce the occupied space therefore a maximum number of products that could be loaded into a transporting truck. Furthermore, the cost incurred during the packaging is lowered as carton boxes costs less compared to other materials such as plastic. Carton boxes are also biodegradable.
