Hydrochloric acid is a very strong acid and a significant element of the gastric juice that has contributed to increased interest in its impact and consequences. Generally, hydrochloric acid is a colorless, clear acid that is found naturally in gastric acid since it is a highly pungent solution of hydrogen chloride in water. The considerable interest in the production of hydrochloric acid is attributed to the belief that it plays a vital role in the development of various aspects relating to peptic ulcer. However, hydrochloric acid plays a crucial role in gastric secretion with regards to the ability of the body to break down proteins, protect overgrowth of bacteria in the gut, and activation of vital hormones and enzymes.
The production of hydrochloric acid is an issue that has continued to attract significant attention, which has culminated in various studies that examine this issue. The most unique cells in the stomach are parietal cells, which principally secrete hydrochloric acid. Actually, this strong acid is secreted throughout the parietal cell microvillar membrane and flows into the oxyntic gland lumen through the intercellular canaliculi. According to Carlin (2002), increased hydrochloric acid in the stomach elevates systemic pH in order to balance body pH (p.73).
