Internship program

The thought of having reached the point at which one gets the chance of exploring a specific field of interest as an intern before embarking on it officially seems exciting. It is at this point that one gets the opportunity to gain practical experience, learn new important skills and become competent as well as gain confidence.

Landing an internship

One has to start applying beforehand and as many times as possible. Application may be done through postal or online services. Networking may also be considered in the case where one is familiar with a person that can connect him to an internship post. After getting into the next stage where one is called for an interview, one has to ensure that proper research about the interviewing company is made and that enough practice is made on the likely questions that could be asked as well as prepared questions to ask the interviewer. At the interview one should display confidence, avoid answering questions before understanding them well, making a good first impression and emphasizing on ones positive aspects; professionalism and friendliness should also be considered as I learnt during my interview and finally being absorbed for the internship.

Once a place as an intern has been secured, one may be under a supervisor who is to help the intern to grow familiar with the departments in the company and some of the staff as well as some of the most significant processes within the organization.

Experience as an intern

As an intern, I was the one who delivered stuff throughout the premises, do the sorting out of crucial documents of the organization for ease of action by the relevant authorities and sometimes make coffee in the morning; occasionally, would get the opportunity of engaging in some serious paper work. This was unlike my expectation. More or less, I had to hold on because I knew this chance was for my own good and increase in my academic credit was pegged on this.

Rather than whine about the situation, I decided to exercise patience and use the situation to my advantage by doing beyond what was expected of me. Just as I expected, my efforts did not go unnoticed as I was then trusted with greater duties.

Even though I had a weakness of not being a very social person, I learnt that I could work under intense pressure and with set targets ad timelines, that I am a good time manager, a quick learner. What stands out most was that team work is most important and that one should constructively accept criticism. One should also take the initiative to work ahead of the deadline.
