Professional Goal Statement

Personal/Professional Goals

I am applying for admission to the RN to MSN degree program with a specialization in Nursing Administration. I have been a nurse since 1998 and I feel that now is the right time to expand my knowledge and skills, particularly in an administrative capacity. I think graduate study is the best way to gain the knowledge that I need to advance my career.

Though I am a committed career nurse, I also have aspirations toward taking on broader leadership and management functions. In my future career, I would like to have a greater role in helping my hospital become more efficient, more legally and financially sound, and more patient care-focused. I pride myself on my commitment to delivering quality health care and I believe that I would thrive in a more executive position in nursing.

In terms of my past academic experience, I graduated with an AAS in Nursing from Kingsborough Community College in 1998. My GPA does not reflect my high degree of motivation at this time, as I had to work full time and had a family to support when I was pursuing that degree. Part of what led me to choose now as the time that I would further my study is that my daughter is now in college and I feel a greater freedom to singularly focus on study. I also have better time management skills that will ensure that I will thrive at Walden.

Research Experience

I have a decent amount of research experience acquired during my time as a nurse, but mostly this was on a more clinical basis and not formally academic. From an educational perspective, I have done research papers as an undergraduate student which required use of literature review and perusal of scholarly material. In terms of direct human study research, I am eager to learn and would relish the opportunity to design and/or take part in a study during my time as a graduate student.

Work/Other Experience

I think that my work experience is the greatest asset that I bring to Walden. I came to the U.S. from Trinidad and Tobago, which gives me a unique perspective on an important population that many hospitals serve, which are patients with immigrant backgrounds. I went through a lot to succeed in America. In the past, I worked as a Nurses Aid with disabled individuals. The rest of my nursing career has been spent at Beth Israel Medical Center, first as a Graduate Nurse and then as an RN/Charge Nurse in the Medical-Surgical Unit. I am excellent at what I do and I love it.

Personal Qualities

In my position at Beth Israel, I frequently take charge and act as a demanding but caring leader. My colleagues rely on me as one of the more senior nurses due to my commitment to cooperation and my sensitivity, compassion, and tenacity.
