Abstract

This essay examines the professional nature of nursing and the critical role of professional nursing organizations in supporting healthcare delivery. Through analysis of Hackensack Meridian Health as an exemplar organization, the paper explores how professional nursing organizations facilitate collaboration, knowledge sharing, continuing education, and advocacy. The discussion highlights the transformative benefits of membership including networking opportunities, resource access, and professional development that enhance both individual practice and patient care outcomes.

Some people may look at nursing as an occupation—but it is really best considered as a profession. It requires education and commitment and thus ticks off the top boxes for professionalism. Nurses have to be academically prepared before they show up on the job. Some training may occur while on the job, yes, but far and away the bulk of training occurs in the classroom. Further evidence of this fact can be seen in the wide array of professional nursing organizations. I am a member of Hackensack Meridian Health, which is a network of providers that offer their professional services to patients. Our professionalism is evident in our network and what we provide.

Some of the top characteristics of professional nursing organizations include access to professional development, chances to network, ethic standards, and advocacy (Nilsen, 2020). All of these characteristics are evident in Hackensack Meridian Health. As a comprehensive healthcare network, it offers numerous opportunities for professional growth and development, including support for continuing education, specialized training, workshops, and seminars that are typical benefits of membership in a PNO. These opportunities allow professionals to stay up-to-date with the latest in healthcare practices, technologies, and research (Isidori et al., 2022).

As a member of Hackensack Meridian Health, I am also a part of a vast network of healthcare professionals. Working in this organization gives me the access I need to be part of a regular and organized environment that supports collaboration, knowledge exchange, and professional networking, which are again some key features of a PNO. Networking within such an organization can lead to career advancement opportunities, collaborative projects, and a broader understanding of various healthcare disciplines.

Membership often comes with access to a wealth of resources such as research materials, medical journals, patient management systems, and technology tools. These resources are invaluable for professionals looking to improve their practice, conduct research, or improve patient care.

PNOs often represent their members’ interests at the local, state, and national levels (Gen et al., 2020). Being part of Hackensack Meridian Health means I get to benefit from the organization\\\\\\\'s efforts to influence healthcare policies, standards, and practices in ways that support the professional interests and values of its members. Ethical and Professional Standards are also big parts of being in a PNO. This is a big benefit of PNOs because it means professionals are holding themselves accountable.

Ultimately, membership in a professional nursing organization brings many benefits. It can give access to continuing education and professional development opportunities, which are always helpful for staying up-to-date on the latest nursing practices and research findings. Networking with peers, mentors, and leaders through such organizations can open doors to career advancement, collaborative projects, and professional mentorship. These organizations help in advocacy, influencing healthcare policies and practices on various levels, thereby shaping the future of nursing and healthcare. Members often enjoy exclusive access to cutting-edge research, publications, and professional recognition programs, which further their knowledge and professional stature. Additionally, leadership and volunteering opportunities within these organizations can enhance one\\\\\\\'s leadership skills and provide a sense of fulfillment by contributing back to the community and the profession. Legal and ethical resources available to members are invaluable, especially when navigating the complex healthcare environment. Overall, the peer support found within these organizations offers emotional and moral support, creates a sense of belonging to a community with shared goals and challenges, which is particularly important in the high-stress field of nursing.
