Session 1 Lesson Plan

Lesson Outline: View "The Business of Being Born" and discuss the perspective of consumer patients. Brainstorm ways that nurses can help bridge the gap described in the movie.

Lesson Objectives: The primary objective of this lesson is to present the current consumerist viewpoint of patients. This is the primary objective also of the hospital given the recent statistics showing improved patient perception when fully informed regardless of adverse events (Schmidt, 2004). The secondary objective is to place the nurses into the position of an educated patient entering the hospital setting.

Objective Relation to Course: These objectives are directly related to the overall course objectives by presenting the current hospital policy and direction towards naturally progressing labor in that nurses are expected to appear educated and helpful to those patients desiring a natural birth while still ensuring the patient's overall safety.

Instructional Approach: This course will follow primarily an experiential learning theory/principle. For this lesson, the students will view the film and then be asked to brainstorm about the expectations of the current consumerist mother. This group brainstorming session is meant to force the nurses into the mindset of a patient and ideally increase interest in the rest of the course material to ensure that the nurses are at the proper readiness level to accept the large amounts of information and policies and will actively use the approaches being taught (Domjan, 2010).

Learner Centered: This lesson is learner-centered by being a highly entertaining film that places the nurses viewing the presentation in the shoes of a delivering patient. This role reversal will ideally allow the nurses to understand the need and desire of the hospital in implementing this approach.

Learning Activity: The learning activity for this lesson is a brainstorming session where the nurses discuss the film and determine the expectations of the consumer patient in labor and delivery. The goal is to help the nurses understand what the patient expects and how they can ensure that the expectation is met and encourage the students to begin diving into their reading to understand how they can actively assist the patient's better.

Numerous studies have revealed the effectiveness of group brainstorming in focused settings. While brainstorming overall can be less efficient than other methods, when utilized for a specific purpose and having set parameters, it can be very effective at obtaining all necessary objectives (Parnes, 1959). Here, the nurses are expected to identify from the film the consumer's expectations, something that each nurse should have been taking notes about during the film.
