Acceptability of project management in organizational contexts

Last reviewed: August 15, 2014 ~4 min read

Establishing acceptability regarding this project requires analysis as to whether the project will provide a number of items including; profitability, a viable concern, a needed service and an expanded footprint in the community. Stakeholders include the public which the project will service -- and specifically those in need of dialysis, shareholders in the company who are interested in generating a return on their investment, and employees who will be provided compensation and additional opportunities for a long-term career. As one expert states regarding acceptability of certain projects "Generally there will be more potential projects available than can be undertaken at any time" (Hann, 2011). If what Hann states is true, then analyzing the acceptability of this project from a stakeholder's viewpoint would help to determine whether or not the project should be undertaken.

A recent study demonstrated that health related quality of life "was highest in the healthy general population, lowest in patients on dialysis, and in between for patients with CKD not on dialysis" (de Goeij, Ocak, Rotmans, Ejigenraam, Dekker, Halbesma, 2014, p. 7). An assumption based on the de Goeij et al. study could be made that dialysis does not really help in maintaining a high quality of life, but no one can disagree that it dialysis does prolong life.

The numbers seem to be staggering concerning diabetes around the world. It is estimated that in 2013 there were over 32 million people diagnosed with diabetes (Melmed, 2011) many of whom experience decreased kidney function that can be offset or alleviated with dialysis. Another report determined that "treatment options for patients with CKD 5, also called end-stage renal disease (ESRD), are transplant and dialysis" (Neil, Walker, Sesso, Blackburn, Tschosik, Sciaraffia, Garcia-Contreras, Capsa, Bhattacharyya, 2009, p. 73).

The same report also determined that "in the absence of kidney transplantation and without dialysis these patients would die of uremia, many within a matter of weeks" (Neil et al., p. 73). Saving lives and providing a higher QOL can be seen as a very high motivating factor to obtain dialysis, and with such a high demand, it would seem that the project being considered could fill the need of the public and the need for shareholders to receive a viable return on their investment if such demand is met in a profitable manner.
