Proposal for a New Bowling Sports Team at My College

Last reviewed: November 22, 2010 ~7 min read

¶ … proposition describes the description of the requested new sports team: The bowling team. The school lacks a proper bowling representation, and the following document will explain the estimated costs, staffing requirements, locations, timetable, security issues, equipment and amenities, hours of operation, and the consequences of this fine university hosting a bowling team for the following seasons to come.

The objective of this proposal is to provide the university with information in order to determine if or when the school will have the capacity and the desire to host its own bowling team. The existence of a bowling team will encourage school spirit and the growth of interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills for the students. The bowling team will create better morale and a greater dedication to the school, which could potentially raise education, population, and grade levels. Creating a new type of sports team could attract students and potential students from many varying demographics.

3.0 Background

Currently, this university lacks a sufficient bowling team. There are many sports teams and arts clubs are already in existence at the university, but none of which accommodate that of the bowling desire in the students. In order to attract and maintain yet another demographic to the school, this university needs to severely consider the allowance and creation of its own bowling team. The creation of the team will benefit the school, the students, and the faculty involved in the bowling team.

4.0 Proposal

4.1 Estimated Costs

Because the bowling team's first year would require start up costs, a great deal of initial equipment would need to be purchased. Proper bowling regulation shoes may either be fully purchased or temporarily rented from a local bowling facility. As a school team, there will be a requirement for members to wear a team shirt or jersey during games. If renting the lanes from a local bowling alley, there will be a cost involved for time used or amount of games played. If transporting students to and from the local bowling facility, there will be a cost to provide school transit and a school bus operator. When practicing at the university gym, practice lanes, pins, and bowling balls will need to be purchased. As with all other sports teams, a health waiver will need to be created to eliminate university responsibility in the case that a student may be injured while functioning as a member of the bowling team. The legal costs to create this document will also be a portion of the new bowling team estimated costs. Finally, at the end of the season, the students will desire a prize or trophy for their commendable efforts, and this will be a financial responsibility as well.

A number of these costs are not required to be the university's responsibility. The university may require a surcharge to be paid for joining the team that will cover most costs, including team members' own lane, shoe, and jersey fees. However, some charges, like that of the health waiver, should be paid for by the university.

4.2 Staffing Requirements

School teams are required to have a university staff member present as head or assistant coach. The bowling team will most likely be an intimately small team, and will only require one head coach. For the role of the assistant coach, a student bowler may volunteer. If a student does not volunteer or more than one student volunteers, a vote will be cast and the determined student that is elected as president or captain of the team will serve as the assistant coach. Lastly, a student lead treasury department will need to be appointed in order to handle and budget all costs relayed in the Estimated Costs section of this proposal.

4.3 Locations

There are three opportunities in the surrounding area for venue practice and game locations. First, the bowling team may agree to transport itself to a local public bowling alley. Secondly, the team may decide to practice at the school location on practice lanes, while performing games at another location. If chosen, equipment listed in the Equipment and Other Amenities section will provide information about the transportable practice lanes. Lastly, if the bowling league becomes popular and profitable enough in coming years, the school may find it reasonable, and possibly profitable, to build a bowling facility on campus to hold practices, games, physical education courses, and public bowling.

4.4 Timetable

Upon approval of this proposal, it would take an estimated two weeks to organize a bowling team, provided an additional two weeks would be given to advertise and recruit interested members of the school community.

4.5 Security Issues

Every university sports team has the potential for injury to its members. It will be important for all members of the bowling team to sign a health waiver and be notified of what injuries may occur on the bowling lanes. A proper bowling trainer or coach will need to be present at all practices. If choosing to practice and perform at a public bowling alley, there is potential for injury, harm, or obstruction to public bowlers as well as the university bowling team. Precautions should be made to ensure the safety is at its best for all parties present.

4.6 Equipment and Other Amenities

There will be a number of supplies needed for the university to host a bowling team. Those bowling supplies available for rent may be provided by the local bowling alley, if said team chooses to use it for business. These items may include shoes and bowling balls. If the bowling team wishes to purchase personal bowling balls, bowling bags for safe transport will be required. When the team performs real games, they will require a jersey. If the team wishes to hold practices in the university gym, it will require that a practice lane or lanes be set up. The lanes are portable, with a durable fabric lane, plastic pins, and a rubber bowling ball.

4.7 Hours of Operation

The bowling team will require two nights of practice per week, including one game once a week. The bowling team season will last twelve weeks.

5.0 Consequences

5.1 Advantages

There are many advantages for the student to participate on a bowling team. Bowling is fun, easy, and one does not have to be physically fit to enjoy its benefits. It allows students to practice their teamwork and communication skills, as well as their bowling skills. The team will help students become more involved in the school and have more school spirit and have faculty have a greater relation to their students.
