Public Health: Obesity a) The health problem I will focus on is obesity as a result of fast-food consumption. The outcome objective is to reduce this unhealthy habit and encourage a greater concern with healthier foods and more frequent exercise.
A b) Overweight and obesity is a global problem that affects more than 1 billion adults (World Health Organization 2005). Many health problems are associated with obesity. These include type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer. These diseases are a chronic burden on the economy of both developed and undeveloped countries.
A c) The two most important determinants of the problem are an increase in consumption of energy-dense and nutrient-poor foods (WHO, 2005), and a reduction of physical activity. A direct contributing factor to the former is the advertising of unhealthy food as desirable. An indirect contributing factor is often hectic work, school and social schedules - people are unable to invest the proper time and effort into a healthy diet. A direct contributing factor to the second determinant is the lack of energy resulting from unhealthy eating habits. Indirectly, social changes in work and economic habits result in fewer physical activities from day-to-day.
A d) To encourage more physical activities, community programs such as walking and jogging competitions could be arranged. These activities will then be focused on the whole family, with categories to focus on the abilities of men, women and children.
