Public Sector Management

The public sector and its managers find themselves in the position of dealing with the continuous modification of the factors that influence the public sector and with the challenges that are determined by the population's lack of satisfaction towards the quality of the public service. An important challenge has been revealed by the media as the riots that took place in London and the manner that the police used in counteracting the effects of the manifestations.

In an article titled "Police Not Politicians Quelled the Riots" posted on the website of the UK public sector, the author discusses several points-of-view about how the police handled the situation (Public Service, 2011). The article reveals the dissatisfaction expressed by both the government and the citizens of London. In their opinion, the police was too slow and made several mistakes in responding to these riots. Police representatives dismissed these political accusations and defended the decisions made by police chiefs.

However, police members explained the situations management by stating that there were not enough officers on duty. These actions are strongly linked with the police cuts revealed by the program of austerity developed by the government. The Labor Party has declared itself against the budget cuts at the London police. But the Prime Minister considers the Labor Party's opposition as not being based on the necessities of the country. He also stated that the riots are not caused by the government's policies.

The importance of this news story relies on the fact that it affects a great part of the population and that its causes might exceed the social situation of the rioters, as explained initially. In addition to this, these manifestations and the conflict management developed and implemented by the police have determined specialists in the field, but also the population to take into consideration certain modifications to the government's policies (Public Service, 2011). The writer approached the subject from an objective manner, presenting the point-of-view of police representatives, of political leaders, but also of the population affected by the manifestations.

In addition to this, the subject addressed by this article is in strong relationship with several issues, like the efficiency of public organizations, the society, resource constraints, the quality of public service, and performance management. The article presents several points-of-view that question the efficiency of the police teams and their situation management. However, the author of the article discusses some of the causes that determined the actions of the police. The budget reductions are considered an important cause.

Another article in the Guardian discusses the effects that the budgetary reductions are likely to produce. The article is written by Fiona Harvey and refers to the effects on rural transportation. The writer addresses the job reductions in countryside buses. The most important effects of this action are represented by the fact that education and healthcare services will become difficult to reach in these areas, while air quality could be reduced. This also affects people's possibilities of finding jobs, of traveling to school or college, and in reaching health services (Harvey, 2011).

The importance of the issue addressed by this article is represented by the fact that a great part of the population is likely to be significantly affected. In addition to this, the effects of this measure are expected on medium term and on long-term. Therefore, it is important to present the issues that derive from this action and their consequences. The article addresses these issues, making them easy to understand by the readers. These aspects refer to important factors that influence the situation of the government, of certain public organizations, and of the population of the country.
