Training and Development in and for the Business & Enterprise development is an important area of the requirement of business enterprises and companies today as technology and work techniques change very rapidly.
In this paper we will firstly consider a real business which can benefit from training and development of the employees / staff and then look at how the requirements for training were identified, who in the organization needed the training and how the training was then imparted to increase the productivity of the workforce.
Case Study of an organization with a training need
GAP, Inc. is a global company operating in the area of garment manufacturing and owns three brands -Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy- with revenues topping $11.6billion.
The company has 140,000 employees performing sourcing, warehousing / store and supply operations round the world.
The company recently introduced a new software system for store operations which would automate the inventory system and change the way that the employees did their job. There was firstly a need to understand how the new system will impact on the organization and then the workforce which was going to be affected had to be trained so that there was a seamless change to the new system.
Obviously since there is a large organization with a large sourcing, storage, inventory handling system as an essential part of its way of doing business, there has to be an effort made to ensure that these parts of the business are cost effective, productive and that there are management systems in place which can provide management information to the corporate managers.
A change will affect a lot of employees and the intricacies and effects of introducing the new system had to be explained to a large number of employees so that the maximum benefits could be retrieved from the expenditure on the new system.
To smoothly incorporate the new system, GAP Inc. hired TechProse, a company with strengths in the area of automated / IT system training, business need analysis and technical writing.
Needs assessment process analysis and solution for GAP Inc.
The GAP Company has central offices and field stores for its business of retailing the fashion garments. In order to better understand the requirements of the trainees and the expectations of the company, the key executives of the GAP Inc. were interviewed and their expectations and requirements were discussed and an analysis was prepared.
To better understand the requirements of the middle level field, store and warehouse managers they too were interviewed and reports were generated to keep their requirements and expectations in mind when training the workers.
Gap is also spread all over the United States of America and there are regional variations in the way people work and live although these may be sleight. The United States of America also has four different time zones and hence the problems associated with training the workforce with these constraints as understood.
Finally some persons who were representative of the people who were required to be trained were interviewed to determine their requirements such as how much time could be devoted and what should be imparted, starting from where. The timeline and costs associated with the training was studied and proposed.
The result was a one day online train the trainer type course with exercises. The online course was required because of the geographical breadth and spread of the locations all across the United States where the training was required. It was not possible for the trainers to visit each and every locality and impart training there as such an approach would have been prohibitive and too time consuming.
