Quentin Tarention
Quentin Tarantino
Quentin Tarantino is certainly an icon in film directing and in cinematography in general, given the success his controversial films experienced during the last two decades. His debut in the world of film with Reservoir Dogs (1992) and Pulp Fiction (1994) made it obvious that he was reluctant to take on traditionalism in doing his job. His movies virtually revolutionized the way film enthusiasts and amateurs perceived motion pictures. Pop culture was reborn along with the director's movies, considering that he referenced the movement in a whole different way from how it was put across by those before him.
One of the most notable films directed by Tarantino is Pulp Fiction, taking into account the debates it produced among film critics shortly after its release. The movie made it perfectly clear that Tarantino was a great fan of pop culture. However, even with his devotion for the domain, he did not hesitate to involve satire as a form of expressing some of his personal views regarding it. In addition to satirizing pop culture, the director goes further and proves that it is just as fun when it is put next to a great deal of violence. It almost seems as if Tarantino wants violence to stand as a cliche relating to how it too can be enjoyable, as gore and blood is not as horrible anymore. The only difference between the violence presented by Tarantino and that typically seen in action films is that his is much more shocking. Surely, one can be inclined to believe that this makes his films less enjoyable and even that they influence the public in committing acts of aggression. However, the fact that Tarantino pushes violence to never-before seen heights makes it less harmful to viewers, as it is obvious that everything is meant to be a farce, with hostility simply being adapted to fit pop culture.
Tarantino does not actually bring on new elements through his movies, as he simply uses standard film making elements and fashion trends seen from his own perspective. Aesthetics is one of the main factors in Tarantino's films, with the director paying a great deal of attention to the concept. A storyline that initially seems rather dull, given the numerous films that have similar scripts produced in the present turns out to be a masterpiece, likely to surprise even the most ardent critics.
Pulp Fiction is all about pop culture, as viewers are presented with the 50s cars driven by an Elvis-looking John Travolta and a 1960s disco-looking Samuel L. Jackson as they roll through contemporary scenery, coming across a series of difficulties in doing their so-called gangster missions.
The music found throughout the movie is also a reference to earlier times, with the dance scene between Travolta and Uma Thurman definitely raising pop-culture spirits in most of the audience.
One can actually feel a sentiment of nostalgia as he or she goes through Tarantino's movies, since his films appear to be done in accordance with some of the earliest movies in the history of film-making, the only difference being that the director has chosen to leave his instantly recognizable print on these motion pictures.
Tarantino's motion pictures send a mixed message to the public, but even with that, most people are likely to understand it exactly as the director wants them to. In spite of the rather parody nature seen in most of Tarantino's films, viewers are left with the impression that they learnt something, namely that every action has a reaction, and that they should be more careful about their performances.
Tarantino is simply doing what all movie directors try to do: direct movies that would generate a positive feed-back both from the masses and from critics. However, the fact that he takes on elements the public wants to see and transforms them so as they would fit his convictions makes his films more interesting than most of the other motion pictures produced in the present.
Tarantino is an entertainer and his main mission is that of pleasing the public through any means possible, even if that implies taking on historical events and twisting them with the purpose of appealing and shocking viewers. Judging from a great deal of motion pictures produced consequent to Tarantino's first blockbusters, it would seem that numerous directors have focused on creating similar works, films that would show characters acting totally different from what was seen before and yet put across an enjoyable plot.
