Computer programs for remedial reading in elementary classrooms

¶ … remedial reading problems that K-6 children and teachers are faced with, research needs to be done not only into the methods of reading teachers that are most effective, but how children are affected by the other issues that are going on in their lives at the time. In other words, is the children's ability to read well affected only by how much and how well they are taught by teachers, parents, and other adults, or does it also have a correlation to their family life as a whole? In the article reviewed, the authors discuss the use of computers and how they can aid children in both preventing reading disabilities and offering remediation for the reading problems that many children are facing today. A teacher in a K-6 school could use this particular instructional technique to help children learn their alphabet and pronunciation skills and also to allow children that were struggling to spend some of their 'free time' with the computer so that they could work to catch up with their peers.

This kind of learning is often much more fun and enjoyable than the 'standard' form of learning, and this helps children to have the desire to read. When these children see that they can use the computer in the classroom to learn their phonetics and other reading issues during their free time, they begin to realize that they can do something on their own, which helps their self-esteem levels and also makes them more interested in the joys of learning, which can open up a whole new world for these children.
