Gance-Cleveland, B. (2004). "Qualitative Evaluation of a School-Based Support Group for Adolescents With an Addicted Parent." Nursing Research. 53 (8): 379-86.
What data was collected in this study? How was the data analyzed? This study was qualitatively based and focused on multi-cultural students from middle and lower-class economic backgrounds. Data was collected from students, administrators, and group cofaciliators. Focus group and survey results were tabulated and analyzed using standard ethnographic methods.
Summarize the results of the study in your own words -- remember that results are the findings based on analysis of the data. Findings from the study validated goals of support groups in risk populations of students with at least one addictive parent or caregiver in the household. Because children in these situations often feel powerless and out of control, the research found that integrating school support systems resulted in both healthier choices being made, increased coping skills, and the ability to retain and project power in appropriate situations.
3. What findings from this study were based on descriptive statistics? List them below.
Findings consistent with previous statistical analysis of adolescent girls (referencing Campbell-Heider, et.al., 2003).
Emotional distress and behavior problems rubric (Wassef, et.al. 1998).
Evaluation of life-training skills (Botvin, et.al., 1995)
Template showing increased coping and life skills (Houck, et.al., 2002)
4. What findings from this study were based on inferential statistics? List them below. (if there were no inferential statistics used, what other process was used to develop the research findings?)
Researcher inferred similar psychographic characteristics from previous studies and other, unique populations.
Broad level results were inferred using small sample size and a consistent, but not robust, participant universe.
5. What points did the author cover in the discussion section of the research report? What limitations to the study did the author discuss? What conclusions did the author develop as a result of the study? What new knowledge was generated by this research study?
Author buttressed views on support mechanisms using descriptive analysis from previous literature.
Author agreed limitation of the study was that the researcher was the cofaciliator.
School performance data was not examined or analyzed.
Study was gender biased (e.g. female only)
Conclusions focused on efficacy of intervention and therapeutic model
Research results tend to buttress previous findings rather than provide brand new knowledge.
6. Do you agree with the author's conclusions -- can this study be applied to your clinical practice? Why or why not? The material is difficult with which to disagree. This particular population shows marked and measurable improvement in societal skills after being a part of the programs offered. The data can easily be extrapolated into different populations, amended as needed, but as a basic set of standards with which to begin the process in almost any educational setting.
Ridge, R. And a. Goodson. (2000). "The Relationship Between Multidisciplinary Discharge Outcomes and Functional Status After Total Hip Replacement." Orthopedic Nursing. 19 (1); 71-82.
1. 1. What data was collected in this study? How was the data analyzed? Data from 24 patients who were admitted for primary hip replacement was collected. Participants were assessed for functional status using standard modification; mobility assessed, as well as general medical issues. Data was analyzed using the 1975 Sickness Impact Profile, a standard explanatory measurement within the field.
7. 2. Summarize the results of the study in your own words -- remember that results are the findings based on analysis of the data. The study found that functional status improved between pre and post-operative states in patients who underwent total hip replacement surgery. This also included basic mobility and movement. No real relationship was established regarding the patient's pain, however.
8. 3. What findings from this study were based on descriptive statistics? List them below.
Patients asked to rate (describe) themselves on predetermined research measures.
No attention to mortality.
Table 4 presents statistically significant correlations in patients
Literature review and extensive analysis provides base score data signals.
9. 4. What findings from this study were based on inferential statistics? List them below. (if there were no inferential statistics used, what other process was used to develop the research findings?)
Inferences based on literature review and historiography of initial surgical approach.
Inferences made on pain management in different age groups.
Relationships between levels of pain, complications during surgical procedure.
10. 5. What points did the author cover in the discussion section of the research report? What limitations to the study did the author discuss? What conclusions did the author develop as a result of the study? What new knowledge was generated by this research study?
Rather limited population group, and lack of ability to analyze data with the other 25+ who had surgery the same day.
