Difficult Professional Experiences of My

Last reviewed: August 20, 2007 ~4 min read

¶ … difficult professional experiences of my working life. Though I have held important positions in a support role for many years, there are situations that margin on failure that are outside of one's personal control and require considerable insight to overcome and grow from. In short I will describe the experience of taking a position that was above me, trying to make it work, without loosing myself and lastly moving on from it with the knowledge that I had learned from it and that it will likely be one of the most important growth experiences of my life.

The value of understanding your place in any given workforce is essential to success. This work demonstrates an interpersonal and professional transition that was made by me in the last few years. In this experience, which turned out to be largely a failure I garnered countless lessons about work and life. I challenged my skills to their very limit and may have in fact realized my real limitation, with regard to professional development and training. I also realized a that a great deal of the failures, that occurred were not as a result of my inability to do the work, but where as a result of my inability to look past my limitations and ask for help. Asking for help is a risk, as I may have been seen as a candidate unprepared for the work, and been let go earlier, or in the best case scenario I might have been helped to such a degree that I was then capable of the work. If I had asked for help, or even refused the job initially, I may also have limited my future, as the learning I received in this work situation has been crucial to my decision to further my education and continue to grow as a professional.

CONCLUSION

This work demonstrates a significant professional and personal period of transition in my life. It demonstrates that all conflict is not bad, and that some conflict in fact can serve as an impetus for the improvement of professional goals and personal skills. It is always a risk to admit failure in any situation, and yet the importance of admitting and learning from failure is frequently essential in the process of self-development. Through this rather frustrating experience in which I learned that I needed greater skills and education in order to continue to improve my professionalism and job attainment I have also generated a rather fundamental understanding of the importance of listening to my inner voice. My inner voice told me that I should not take the job and that I would not fit in, but having ignored this inner voice, I also learned a great deal about myself, my historical education and skills and most importantly that if you at first ignore your inner voice you must listen to it later and illicit interventions that better match your skills without self-fulfilling negativity.
