Refugee Story Pitch

Refugees In the last 18 months, the U.S. has begun the process of resettling 60,000 Bhutanese refugees. This group of refugees has a couple of unique features that makes it a compelling story. This group comes from Bhutan, and are of Nepali origin, people who had settled in Bhutan decades ago. However, they were evicted from Bhutan in the 1990s, but Nepal has also refused to give them citizenship as well.

The United States has been at the fore of the countries that have been able to step in and resettle them from their refugee camps. The Bhutanese have come to the United States with no real community to help them resettle, different from other groups, which lends an element of uniqueness to the story. The Bhutanese also have an interesting element as a stateless people, a situation that tends to only arise rarely, but which has a compelling human narrative.

The story is important because this group has unique characteristics that make it a good story. They are the essence of the American dream, immigrants who have arrived in American in order to escape persecution, build their community and find a new identity in a new home country. Their story speaks to all Americans because of these elements. As a seasoned writer about immigrant stories, I am qualified to write this story.

I have profiled new immigrants before, and have demonstrated an ability to weave strong human interest stories in with the overarching narrative. I see that overarching narrative as being as much about the American dream than anything else.

The backdrop, small nations that many readers will have never heard of, has a low level of interest, but as a human story it is one that many Americans can relate to as the same immigrant story their families and friends could tell, of a people coming to this country looking for a fresh start. The story also ties into the entire point of having refugee programs. Refugees come to the U.S., and have for decades, because of what the country represents, and how the U.S.

takes in refugees. Many Americans, especially those who do not routinely come into contact with refugees, do not know much about refugees living here. They do not know much about the systems for helping refugees, and what this story could convey is how the beginnings of the refugee experience looks like. This is an interesting dynamic, because there are so many layers to the story. When these are all investigated and put into context, the story of Bhutanese refugees coming to the U.S.

has powerful human interest and interest as an example of the American dream experience. There are a number of sources for the story. First, within the community itself there needs to be one or two stories told, so there should be interviews with some Bhutanese in America. The younger generation speaks English, and many from that generation would have been raised entirely in a refugee camp, so interviews with some of the younger members of the community should yield a solid narrative.

There is also value in interviewing a spokesperson for the group, who can provide a fair bit of big picture information about the status of these people, and what the community's overall experience has been in the United States.
