Abstract

Perhaps the best introduction to Provence, other than that it is a melting pot of influences and cultures, is its touristic value. Valuable treasures and architectural monuments from the Antiquity and the Middle Ages are located in Provence. These include the Roman arena in Arles, one of the largest in Europe, the Papal Palace in Avignon, where the Popes lived for several decades during the 14th century, and the Castle of Tarascon. Finally, if these haven't had a chance to convince you yet, even if there is more to this letter that can, two words: Cote D'Azur! As mentioned, Provence, among other things, is particularly interesting as an object of study for its history. Human life in Provence has been identified, because of the different tools and instruments that were discovered, as early as 1-1.5 million years ago, making Provence one of the earliest known place in Europe where signs of life were discovered. Closer to our times, from the 10th century BC, Ligures and Celts dominated what is now Provence, but there were strong influences from the Greeks as well, who settled on the coast during the 7th century. The Greeks established the town of Massalia, which is now known as the port of Marseilles.

¶ … Recap" of class work so far, which two or three areas/fields of study would you like to pursue if you were in France? What interests you about these areas or fields of study?

In France, I would like to take a history of art class, focusing on modern art. I would also like to take some sociology classes, of special interest to me are classes focused on migration, the history of migration in France as well as migration patterns in this country today and its challenges for the French society, compared to similar issues in the U.S., for example. Since we are living in a globalized world and people are more mobile than ever, I am interested to study the problems related to migration in order to be able to offer solutions.

By means of the study of art history I would love to get a better grasp of art in general and by focusing then on modern art, I would like to be able to gain an insight in the future of art and how it will influence the development of human societies.

2-What are the perspectives for studying in Normandy and elsewhere suggested. Which approach would you be most likely to take? Give examples and details to support your ideas.

In Brittany, for example, it is suggested that the study of the ancient Celtic culture as well as that of the Breton language, a language that was almost extinguished, but it has been revived and it is still spoken today would be some interesting areas of study.

3-Regional web sites

After visiting the web sites (Alsace, Auvergne, Picardy), give examples of educational opportunities you could pursue there. Give examples from at least two of the regions.

Alsace -- being a mix of the German and French culture and influenced by Switzerland, its neighbor, Alsace offers multilingual education. Oenology, cross-cultural studies and archeology are just a few of the interesting areas of study there.

Picardy sau Auvergne -- nu stiu ce sa spun in afara de ce am spus mai sus, din pacate, nu gasesc nimic deosebit….:(

4-Video clips

Having looked at the video clips from three different regions (Southern France, Loire, and Champagne), give examples of the types of field study a student could do in at least two of the regions.

The Loire Valley and Champagne provide a wide range of attractions and one is likely to come across a great deal of impressive concepts in these two regions. Ranging from the typical French villages to the imposing chateaux de la Loire, the Loire Valley is certainly superb. Champagne is similarly impressive and the Champagne wine and areas like Reims with its beautiful cathedral.
