Clinical Skills Self Assessment
As an advanced practice nursing student, my journey in the world of healthcare has been rewarding, with each encounter and every experience increasing my skills, knowledge, and clinical acumen. An important part of the path towards becoming a proficient healthcare professional, however, is self-assessment. Women\'s reproductive health is a focus of my studies and practice, and this paper addresses my self-assessment in this area.
Self-Assessment and Insight
After completing the Clinical Skills and Procedures Self-Assessment, I have gained valuable insights about my current level of proficiency in a range of procedures related to women\'s reproductive health. My experience as a working nurse in a women\'s health clinic has also enabled me to develop a solid foundation, particularly in the areas of pap smears and breast examinations. With consistent practice and a high volume of patients, I\'ve grown very confident in these procedures, rating myself a 5 out of 5 in both these areas.
However, the self-assessment also highlighted areas where I need to improve. While I have some experience with Intrauterine Device (IUD) insertions, I find myself less assured and have rated my confidence level as 3 out of 5. I find that I could use more exposure and practice to feel thoroughly competent in this area.
Also recognizing that my competence in performing colposcopies is currently at a modest level, it is clear to me that I have room for significant improvement in this competency as well. Given that this procedure plays an important role in identifying and preventing cervical abnormalities, I would say it is an area where increased proficiency will directly contribute to patient outcomes. Currently, my comfort level is limited due to minimal exposure and practice. To rectify this, during my practicum, I intend to actively seek opportunities to observe, learn, and eventually assist in this procedure under expert supervision. Increasing my confidence and competence in this procedure will also promote Healthy People 2030\'s objectives in reducing the number of new cancer cases as well as the illness, disability, and death caused by cancer.
Similarly, while my confidence in managing menopause-related issues is relatively high, I recognize that this is a broad field with inherent complexities. Every woman experiences menopause differently and therefore requires personalized care and management strategies. Some may suffer from severe symptoms that can significantly impact their quality of life, while others may be more concerned about long-term health risks associated with post-menopause, such as osteoporosis or heart disease.
Understanding the nature of menopause and how to manage it requires a good understanding of the subject, which is something I want to develop during my practicum. With this goal in mind, I will eventually be better equipped to support women through this phase of life.
This intention also aligns with the Healthy People 2030 goal of promoting health and well-being at all life stages. Plus, if I can improve my understanding of menopause management, I can contribute to the initiative\'s objective of reducing the proportion of women experiencing difficulties getting the menopause-related information and services they need. In bolstering my skills in these areas, I should be able to provide more comprehensive and competent care to my patients, thus supporting the broader health goals established by Healthy People 2030.
Reflection and Goals
Reflecting on my self-assessment, my goals for the upcoming practicum are centered around augmenting my clinical skills in areas related to women\'s reproductive health that I identified as needing improvement. These include IUD insertion, colposcopy procedures, and comprehensive management of complex menopause cases.
In terms of IUD insertion, despite some previous experience, I recognize the need for increased proficiency. This technique requires a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills to ensure safety and comfort for the patient, and successful contraceptive outcomes. To bolster my competence, I plan to actively engage in experiential learning. Specifically, I aim to observe at least five procedures performed by experienced practitioners to learn best practices, and then put this theory into practice by performing at least ten supervised insertions by the end of the practicum. Resources such as Fowler\'s (2019) \"Procedures for Primary Care\" give step-by-step procedural guidance that will allow me to refine my technique.
As for performing colposcopies, my confidence and experience are currently limited. Understanding the importance of this diagnostic procedure in detecting cervical abnormalities, I am committed to enhancing my competence. I intend to participate in workshops or training sessions to gain theoretical knowledge, as well as actively seek opportunities for hands-on learning during my practicum. I want to assist and eventually perform at least ten colposcopies under supervision. Schuiling and Likis\'s (2022) \"Gynecologic Health Care\" will serve as an excellent reference here, given its comprehensive coverage of gynecological procedures.
