Natural Disasters

Disaster preparedness education program

Disasters take varied forms and they are bound to happen when lest expected. These are events that are not confined to any given location or region nor confined to given periods. This unpredictability of disaster makes them lethal and hard to contain or stay 100% safe from. It is however possible to take into account the mitigation measures that are appropriate in ensuring the best precaution is observed at the times when these disasters strike. For effective care to be taken, it calls for an absolute acquaintance with various facts and precautions as well as steps and directions to take in the event of a disaster. These can be achieved through a comprehensive education program on disaster management.

The disaster of interest here is the tornadoes or storms. This is due to the frequency of such disaster, their unpredictability in terms of extent of destruction as well as the lack of control over such disasters. Historically, tornadoes have been the most destructive natural disasters that have hit and continue to hit the U.S.A. due to the exacerbating factors that accompany tornadoes. Despite being a natural disaster, it usually induces destructions that are accomplished by man-made objects like the electricity shortages and destruction as well as using the very shelters of people as a killing tool, and that is in addition to the flooding that frequently accompany the tornadoes.

The location and population targeted in this program is the middle school kids who are caught by the tornado alert at school. The middle school in this case is in the rural area and with an average population of 400 students. This will make the target population fro the education program in terms of those to be rescued and be educated on the safety precautions during disasters. It is significant to note that the reaction of the students will largely determine the ease and consequently safety with which the rescue work will be conducted.

The program will also target the disaster management teams within the school setting. Of specific interest will be the school management, the local authority as well as the rescue teams that are usually deployed to the disaster scenes.
