The field of nursing is part of the backbone of healthcare. For me, it presents an exciting and potentially very rewarding future career path. This paper discusses the projected job outlook for nursing, the educational requirements, social influences on career choice, and the personal impact of this profession.

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the demand for registered nurses is projected to grow significantly due to an aging population and the need for healthcare services (Bureau of Labor Statistics, n.d.). This growth means job security and opportunities for advancement.

Educational Requirements and Similar Occupations

To pursue a nursing career, an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is needed at minimum. This level of education opens doors to different healthcare roles, such as licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and surgical technologists, which require similar training (Bureau of Labor Statistics, n.d.).

Social Influences on Career Choice

The decision to pursue nursing could be said to be influenced by larger social forces. For example, gender norms historically have steered women towards caregiving roles like nursing (Labor Force Statistics from the Current Population Survey, n.d.). Economic factors and social class can also dictate access to education and career opportunities in this field.

Nursing impacts one's perception of health and well-being and what both mean holistically. The prestige and respect associated with nursing I feel also contribute to one's sense of personal success.

The statement "You are your job" is debatable. A career in nursing can shape one's identity, but I do not believe it should be the sole defining factor. As shown in the WBUR article, it is actually important to maintain a balance and not let work solely define one's sense of self (WBUR, 2021).

In conclusion, nursing is a rewarding career that offers growth, stability, personal satisfaction, and the opportunity to make a positive impact on society. It does require specific educational qualifications and its pursuit is influenced by social factors, but it should not be seen as one’s entire identity—rather, just an important part.
