Alcohol dependence is a problem that has plagued our society since a long time. It is a known fact that alcohol not only affects the alcohol but also the people around him. Tubman (1993) went onto inquire that in more detail when he carried out this research project. In this study, 53 families were chosen from one community.

The division was almost equal such that half of the families were the ones that had alcohol dependent men and the other half were comparison families. It was noted that the structure of the families was similar in both groups. There needed to be an ongoing marriage in the family and the age of the child that was going to be studied also needs to be the same. Subsequent to the selection of the families, the father was inquired and assessed using an Alcohol Dependents Scale.

Along with analyzing the father, information about the drinking habits were also acquired from the women as well. As it would be expected, alcohol dependence was measured in the same exact manner for both groups. After noting down the alcohol dependence of the father, the child was assessed for depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems. Lastly, the family functioning was looked at regarding the marital satisfaction that was present between the couple.

This area was also looked into in more detail by looking at the conflict rate amongst the husband and the wife. In addition, the economical state of the family was also studied by looking at the number of bedrooms in the house and the annual income of the father. The result of the study conducted indicated that families of the alcohol dependent men had decreased family income, less number of bedroom and a lower educational level of the father.

(Tubman, 1993) The study also revealed that there was a lower family functioning in families where the father was dependent on alcohol. Furthermore, child depression and anxiety was also increased in children whose fathers were dependent on alcohol. The basic conclusion was that there is a strong correlation between alcohol dependence of the father and behavioral problems in the child. There were certain family risk factors that came up such as marital complications and decreased family functioning.

Regardless, the major reason of child depression was linked to the excessive alcohol intake by the father. It should be noted that the wives of alcohol dependent men also reported various instances of conflict and decreased family functioning. All of this gave proof that alcohol dependence in the father is a major disruption for the child, the wife and the family as a whole. As stated in the study, the men who were dependent on alcohol had less education and their income was decreased as well.

This study shows that there is proof of transmission of psychological and social problems from the parents to the children. This article gave a good insight about how parental actions and behavior goes on to affect the children. Parents and the society as a whole always keep an eye out for things like bullies, peer pressure, smoking, and drugs. All go these agents are known to make a bad influence on the child. However, this study clearly shows that parental habits and actions do tend to affect children as well.

It should be noted that alcohol dependence, child depression and familial conflicts are all interlinked. For the man of the house, it could just be vicious cycle that he cannot get out of. I did like the future implications that were listed in the article. This problem is very prevalent in the society today and it needs to be tamed down. It is also noted that children who have a rough child hood and see alcohol dependence in their family; they are more likely to become alcoholics themselves.

As mentioned earlier, it is a viscous cycle and the family needs to work like a unit to break away from it. The family educators and therapists need to be aware of all the problems that are present in the family. This means that the therapists should know about the income problems, alcohol problems. The problem can only be combated if every aspect of conflict is looked into. This study has therefore opened gates for many other correlations to be looked.
