For Homer, the radio was the voice of the outside world, and all information, long before television ever existed. Homer's Republican father was furious. He was a zealous anti-communist, and this meant that the Russians were 'ahead' in their fight for freedom. Just as people huddled around their televisions during 9/11, Homer kept abreast of Sputnik, wondering if the world was going to end. Even the newscasters were afraid, wondering if an atomic bomb was on board, the Russian spacecraft. Homer's mother simply laughs "Heaven forbid!" she says. She aspires for her son to live a different life than his father (41). So it is easy to identify with Homer's proud mother. She takes the side of progress and intellectual development. But on the other hand, Homer's father is sympathetic, too. His wife's greatest dream is that Homer's son turns out differently than his father, and that the young boy will grows up to be a different man than his father. Homer's father has worked all of his life to build up the industry of Coalwood, and he loves the town. He wants his son to love what he has created and to become an accepted part of life there. Homer wants to be accepted by both parents and to be his own man, and when they quarrel about him, he can only "ease into the dark" and stand with the family dogs (41).

These were Homer's two main goals while he was growing up in Coalwood. Although the rockets Valentine wished to see had yet to reach perfection, the fact that they were worthy of her interest convinced Homer that what he was doing was right, even when he felt discouraged by the results of the project itself. He had always assumed that being a football star was the only way to
