The author certainly communicates effectively, and is not afraid to share her personal beliefs. However, her beliefs seem to be a major part of her argument. I have no argument that spirituality can be extremely important to the mental health of many people, but I also think for some it can be an impediment. In fact, it can be so overwhelming and all encompassing that it actually adds to mental instability and lack of awareness of the real world. This may come under the form of religious zealousness, but she does not address this in her article, except in the form of cults, and they are not the only religions that can create zealots that essentially give up reality for their notion of religious values and their importance. In fact, while this is a scholarly essay with many sources, for the most part, it seems to champion the author's own experiences and beliefs, with a few sources picked to help underscore her attitudes.

It is clear the author disagrees with a majority of people in the psychiatric industry,...

The author notes, "Actually, fewer than 45% of the members of the American Psychiatric Association even believe in God. The general American public has more than twice that percentage of religious devotees" (De Veau 218). There are numerous reasons for this, from education to personal experience with patients steeped in spirituality, and yet the author does not give much discussion to why members of the APA give so little credence to spirituality. For a truly successful argument, I think the author needed to delve into this more, find some of the reasons they disagree, and refute them with her own evidence. This would have made her argument more compelling and believable to me, and I think would have added depth to the paper.

Such is a world from which the Old Testament emerged. With the onset of the New Testament and Christianity, polygamy was replaced by monogamy, mainly because the former was considered immoral from the Christian viewpoint. The church therefore dictated the format of marriages. Furthermore, men were generally favored in terms of laws governing marriage, property, adultery, and the like -- all the tenets of which were based upon religion rather

Religion and Spirituality According to Ferrell & Coyle (2010), religion and spirituality both fall under the rubric of "experiencing transcendence," (p. 14). The difference between religion and spirituality is in the ways transcendence is codified. Religions offer specific languages and modes of discourse, whereas spirituality remains more nebulous because of the lack of the need to share or express ideas with others. Religion has a social function, and can even be

Examples where religion has become intersected with politics are present throughout the entire history, and in more recent years, include the debates on same sex marriages or on abortion. A more specific look at the relationship between politics and religion has revealed at least three points of intersection -- the role of churches, the evolution of human rights and the emergence and impacts of religious conflicts. Spirituality and Its Affects on Wellness During the past few years, spirituality and its affects on health have received a great deal of attention. The media often reports stories concerning prayer and meditation practices that appear to have positive results for many individuals with diseases and/or disabilities. Recent medical studies indicate that people who are spiritual tend to exhibit fewer self-destructive behaviors and stress, and seem to have a greater total
