Roles of Sergeants vs Upper or/And Middle Managers

Differences between the roles of the Sergeants and Upper or/and Middle Managers

The Sergeants and the Middle/Upper managers are departments or types of police officers operating in the United States. Like in other countries, categorization of police officers is essential in making the police roles efficient. This study succinctly identifies the underlying differences in the roles of the two departments of police officers.

First, sergeants perform the first-line supervisory practices in terms of the oversight of various uninformed or new patrol officers. They also facilitate the efficient implementation of various departmental policies geared towards crime prevention and controlling the behaviors of patrol officers. Middle managers include captains, captains and sergeants depending on the jurisdiction (Freeman, 1999). Most of their activities range from the normal patrol work to the largely administrative role. In other words, the main difference between the sergeants and the middle managers is that the middle managers have an additional role of ensuring good management based on the principle of efficiency attainment. Middle Managers do the supervisory role as well but also carry out the crucial leadership roles in the police department (Gaines & Kappeler, 2011). These roles involve proper and rational decision-making and policy implementation.

Sergeants are also involved in the discipline as well as the oversight where they serve as advisors to the new officers, information processors, morale and leadership guidance, and policy change agents. The middle managers, on the other hand, serve the role of implementing various departmental policies (Freeman, 1999). In most cases, police middle managers have faced several challenges relating to slander perhaps because they are always categorized in the group of workers whose attitudes are obstructive to reform realization in many organizations. Middle managers are described as street-oriented officers. Their anticipation is far from willing to manage their previous colleagues or being grouped under the police administration.

In addition, the supervisory styles of the two police groups differ a lot depending on the kinds of roles assigned to each department. Certain roles performed by the sergeants vary considerably across the entire jurisdiction. Sergeants perform patrol functions in smaller departments coupled with their normal supervisory activities. In other words, the notion that police sergeants have routine activities is a fiction. However, the focal activity of several first-line supervisors involves the controlling the behaviors of several patrolling officers. There are four distinct styles used by the sergeants. They include innovative, traditional, active supervision and the supportive aspect. All these aim at perfecting the operations of various police departments in many U.S. states.

Middle managers are grouped into three main functional areas. These are specialized units like the chief of detectives or the tactical operations. Patrol managers named the watch commanders, the police academy training, internal affairs and other strictly administrative functions in the form of research developments. Considering this, it is lucidly true that the sergeants have their roles cutting across the entire jurisdiction, and they perform the patrol functions while in smaller groups compared to the middle managers whose main roles center around the administrative parts with few officers taking part in patrol work.
