Public Safety

Many have trouble comprehending the degree to which runaway incursion can play a significant role in causing both harm to humans and material damage. By considering the history of flying in general, one is likely to gain a more complex understanding of the concept and of strategies he or she can use with the purpose of reducing the risk of it occurring. With safety thinking in general experiencing a great deal of progress during recent years, the aviation industry has invested more and more resources in controlling runways effectively and in providing the masses and employees alike with education regarding the issue.

In order to prevent runaway incursion, the aviation industry needs to focus on individuals controlling air traffic, airport vehicle drivers, and aerodrome managers as they cooperate with each-other and as they get actively involved in making air-plane related environments safer. A global agenda aimed at developing national and local programs meant to improve these respective settings are underway, but still require more attention from the general public. "Such initiatives aim to remove hazards and minimize the residual risk of runway incursions and to reduce active failures and the severity of their consequences." (Manual on the Prevention of Runway Incursions)

The fact that many pilots are sometimes hesitant about acting in agreement with regulations is a major challenge in implementing regulations. Controllers also need to cooperate at this point, as they are in charge of providing clear information. In cases when controllers and pilots effectively do their jobs, there is the risk of runways lacking perimeter roads and thus having vehicles frequently circulating on their surface in spite of the fact that it is mainly designed for aircraft. In such situations, pilots and controllers need to be provided with a complex explanation of their condition so as for them to be able to detect any problem before it can affect them in any way.
