Abstract

This book review examines Firestone's analysis of how Christian leaders can effectively utilize biblical scripture during organizational crises. The review explores the transformative power of scripture in shaping leadership worldview and providing both guidance and comfort during challenging times. It demonstrates how biblical principles offer practical frameworks for crisis management while maintaining focus on spiritual values and eternal perspectives.

A crisis is an inevitable occurrence in every organization, which implies that every leader deals with it. However, leaders take different approaches when dealing with crises depending on the specific objectives to be accomplished. Firestone emphasizes that Christian leaders should lean on scripture when presented with a crisis. His emphasis is based on the view that the Bible comprises several examples of people and leaders dealing with crises (Firestone, p.57). Firestone argues that we should lean on scripture when presented with a crisis because the Bible provides guidance on how to deal with trials and tribulations. By leaning on scripture, leaders find individual support as well as support for their important role as crisis leaders. Therefore, scripture provides guidelines and comfort during a crisis. Scriptural guidelines provide the best approach for dealing with crises.

It is important for a leader to understand the value of scripture for leading during a crisis because it changes their worldview. As previously indicated, scripture provides guidance and comfort during a crisis. The guidance provided in scripture helps to change a leader’s perspective and view of problems. In essence, a leader’s worldview of a crisis is different when he/she uses scripture as the lens for viewing the situation. A leader’s worldview generally influences his/her view of a crisis and how to deal with it. When leaders use scripture to view crises, they adopt a biblical perspective that also influences approaches taken to deal with the situations. Using the biblical worldview to deal with crises, leaders demonstrate to others the major concern is how we treat those around us and where we will spend our eternity. Moreover, using scripture to deal with crises enables leaders to see these situations as things to overcome. Therefore, leaders easily accept crises in the larger context of their own lives and the organization and deal with them in a loving manner.
