Secondary Education
Having a bachelor's degree in Business Management provided me with a career and a living, but it did not provide me with a calling or a passion. For as long as I can remember I have loved children, and ever since my children started school I have worked as a paraprofessional in both standard and special education classes so I can be close to them and other children who need and can use what I have to offer in the way of help, guidance, and care. For more than five years I have had students who I have worked with tell me that they have gotten something positive from the help that I have provided to them, and this rewards me in a way that the business world was never able to do. As a cancer survivor who has won the battle against the disease I feel as though I have a second chance, and I should take that chance and run with it, doing what I have always wanted to do - become a teacher.
I feel that my experience as a paraprofessional in the classroom has given me a lot of insight into what it takes to be a teacher and to do the job each and every day without fail, giving my best to the students. The work I have done is not the same, of course, but it has provided me with a lot of experience and many opportunities to help children. I want to expand on those opportunities so that I can provide more guidance and nurturing to more students in a bigger way. I am a nurturing person by nature, and I am also a positive and patient person. I know that these characteristics will help me to be a good teacher, to work with students who are troubled, and to have patience with those students who are either rebellious or who are simply reaching out for help, as well as those students who might be struggling and getting frustrated with the material.
My positive outlook on life can show the students who I will teach every day that there is always something good in life and that they, too, can make a difference and have an enjoyable life ahead of them even if they sometimes find themselves in difficult circumstances. While they might not always be able to control what happens to them in their lives they can control what they do about what happens to them and how they react to it. They will also be able to see through having me as a teacher that they have someone in their lives who cares about them and who is willing to listen to them. Often this can make a large difference in a child's life, and I have experienced this first-hand with some of the students that I have had the pleasure of working with as a paraprofessional.
I have chosen this institution specifically because I believe it is the best one to help me fulfill my goals. The online curriculum is flexible, the success rate of the graduates is high, and the reputation is a good one. I feel confidence that this is where I want to go to pursue my calling. Since I have had so much experience with diversity in working with the students I have been in contact with I understand that there are always students who need help, students who are different, and students who feel as though they are all alone and struggling.
