¶ … Electronic Medical Records

The use of electronic medical records (EMR) to document patient encounters is an innovative way to keep complicated medical data easily available for all helping physicians of all kinds. Data can be shared between health facilities and physicians. It immediately allows for the transfer of previous health records to facilitate a faster sharing of documents in order to increase the quality of care. However, there are some downfalls from a perspective regarding the use of electronic medical records to document patient encounters. training may become an issue within the healthcare facility. EMR technology is dependent on power and thus the power outage it may impact the patient encounter and the use of new technologies always comes a security risk. training may become an issue within the healthcare facility.

One of the biggest potential issues is the concept of effectively training staff to utilize the technology to its maximum capabilities. Systems may be complicated and ever evolving with advances in technology. It could take a long time and a lot of effort to train the entire nursing staff at a healthcare facility on a complex functioning system. This requires a staff that is able to adapt with the changes. According to the research, "efficiency is maximized when the information technology support department includes vendor-supported personnel who are able to adapt the software for the institution" (Women's Health Care Physicians, 2010). Nursing staff would have to be properly trained, with ongoing maintenance training in order to keep up with any changes in the facilities technology, either first when it is implemented or later down the line if something changes or is compromised.

Moreover, using entirely electronic system with the facilities in questionable positions when face with some sort of catastrophe or major power outage. There is records serious negative impacts caused by "lost data due to power outages" (Women's Health Care Physicians, 2010). Power outages can cause confusion and chaos within the system if the staff is not appropriately trained to deal with incoming patients with no power or access to electronic medical records. Nurses and physicians both need to be prepared still provide quality care in case of a power outage or other serious issue. Otherwise, the hospital facility would have to have some sort of alternate power to keep some functioning of the EMR system in order to protect against such issues.
