Nursing

I am most passionate about people. I enjoy helping people, and see this as my life's work. I am an empathetic person who feels strongly about the value of support for others. I have seen first hand the value of helping and being helped. People in their time of need rely on others to help them, not just with physical issues but with the emotional side of things as well.

I can pursue helping people each and every day. In the present, it is important that I always take the time to listen and to be available for people. By practicing caring every day, I can also be better for the future. I see nursing as being a combination of having empathy, of caring and of being competent. Thus, for the future I can incorporate my passion for caring for others.

This means building my career in nursing. I feel strongly about lifelong learning, and this is something that I have tried to incorporate. By continually building my skills I can put myself into the positions where I can be of the most help to people. This is something that I continue to pursue into the future, and for today.

Ann Hamric's Advanced Practice Nursing: An Integrative Approach highlights a number of strategies that I can work with to become a better nurse practitioner. There are several key elements in her approach: clinical practice, consultation, coaching, research, leadership and ethics. I see myself as fostering a leadership/coaching approach, with a strong sense of ethics. I believe that my passion is best put to working with others, in the way that where I could help just one person, or I could help others to be better as well. This is my vision of nursing leadership, and something that I wish to work towards.

Ethics are a strong component of my approach to nursing. When it is considered that my passion is working to help others, I think it is essential that this approach should include a strong sense of ethics. Ethics blends having a strong knowledge of clinical practice with doing things the right way. Being an advocate for the patient, and helping the patient through their difficult circumstances are things that fit well with my ethical point-of-view, which places strong value on helping others, and holds up helping as one of the best behaviors one can demonstrate. There are elements to this that we do not always think about -- maintaining privacy, for example. Yet, when there are ethical lapses, patients notice those, and the outcomes are never good. Upholding higher standards is important for improving patient outcomes, for the health care provider, and just for one's ability to sleep at night, knowing that they have upheld the highest standards and done one's best for the patient.
