Last reviewed: November 21, 2009 ~3 min read

¶ … Candy Store's culture is positively enhanced by its HRM policies. The policies serve multiple purposes. One is to attract a higher standard of employee than the company's competitors. Hiring employees with a greater degree of commitment to the organization increases the likelihood that these employees with embrace the corporate culture.

Another way in which Candy Store's HRM enhances its culture is through the extensive training program. Enculturation works better when the employees genuinely feel a part of the organization. The Candy Store teaching the full scope of its operations increases employee engagement in the company. The human resource presence at store level also improves employee engagement. Higher engagement equates to more adherence to the corporate culture.

The Candy Store does embrace several of Rostra's core values. Community is one core value evident in the Candy Store's HRM policies -- management, employees and customers are all treated as part of the Candy Store community. Respect is also evident. The Candy Store is unique in its industry is providing extensive training to its employees in areas such as corporate operations and use of promotions to motivate workers to pursue careers at the company

The Candy Store also adopts the Personal Development aspect of Rostra's core values by encouraging its workers to learn more, to grow and to expand their roles within the company. I believe that Personal Stewardship is also embedded in the Candy Store's policies. The managers are "team leaders," taking responsibility for team development. HR staff takes a stewardship role as well, emphasizing development even at the individual store level.

2. The culture at my present employer bears some similarities to that of the Candy Store, but also has some differences. At team meetings for example, there is communication with respect to some of the company's behind the scenes operations. Employees have ownership over their positions as well. There is a significant amount of respect for the employees from management as well, for example not laying permanent employees off during times of economic slowdown.

One difference is that mangers do not take a stewardship role with employees. The latter are expected to define and pursue his or her own growth agendas, rather than be encouraged by management. Thus, personal development is also not something that is openly encouraged. It is not discouraged, but training and development are not a part of my company's culture to the degree that they are at the Candy Store.
