Multicultural Workplace Research: Abstract Review

The research study entitled, "The impact on the cultural diversity to employees' job satisfaction between mainland China and Taiwan: a comparison of Taiwanese invested companies" by Chuan-Cheng Wu and Yu-Chen Chiang (2007) looked into the effect of cultural diversity to employees' satisfaction among mainland Chinese and Taiwanese employees. In the abstract of the research article, the authors shared key points about their research, although details provided were incomplete. Among the research details shared in the abstract were the research topic, research question, participant groups in the study and a summary of the key findings. However, among items not specifically included were the following: methodology, analyses used, and a conclusion that ultimately tells the readers the main result of the study.

Reviewing the research article, these missing details about the research are identified. To develop a complete abstract for the study, these gaps must be addressed and included in the re-developed abstract of the study. For Wu and Chiang's study, the method used is survey, using the instrument adapted from the Chinese Culture Connection study. Participants were Chinese and Taiwanese employees in Taiwanese-owned companies based in mainland China. Total sample size was 451, discounting unreturned questionnaires and invalid respondents. Primary data analysis used were: (i) Mann Whitney U. And T-test to test for the relationship between cultural diversity and employee satisfaction, and (ii) Cronbach alpha, to determine the validity and reliability of the instrument adapted for the study Generally, the results showed that Taiwanese have higher levels of satisfaction as an employee of their respective companies than the Chinese.

Given this additional information, below is the suggested, redeveloped abstract for the study:

This study explores how the Chinese values (Integrations, Confucian Work Dynamism, Human-heartedness and Moral Discipline) impact employees' satisfaction (ES). A total of 451 Chinese and Taiwanese employees who work in mainland China for companies whose parent companies are based in Taiwan were surveyed. Survey instrument used for the study was adapted from the Chinese Culture Connection study. The instrument is further checked for consistency and authenticity using Cronbach alpha test for validity and reliability. Mann-Whitney U- and T-tests were statistical analyses used to test for the relationship between cultural diversity and employee satisfaction. Results showed that indeed, cultural diversity has a significant relationship with employee satisfaction among employees of mainland China-based Taiwanese companies. Further, findings determined that Chinese employees have lower levels of employee satisfaction than Taiwanese employees. This difference could be attributed to the difference in each group's work focus: Chinese employees considered 'management system' as more important to Chinese employees, while job security was considered more important among Taiwanese employees. Findings from this study will help provide direction to management on how to increase employee satisfaction and maintain this among the companies' employees given their cultural and work focus differences.
