Self assessment in professional development

The “Assessing Your Strategies and Creating New Goals” section covers issues related to how well I construct and evaluate arguments. The different components in this section include making analytical reasoning a priority, which refers to my willingness to take the time and think things through before offering a response. On this element, I score a solid 5. While I aspire to be a more thoughtful person who can consider all the ramifications of my decisions, I also do not want to take too much time making choices or to be indecisive. I do encourage others to analyze their own assumptions, though. Having been the eldest child with four siblings has indeed encouraged me to be both a fast and a thorough thinker who can outwit my competitors or opponents when necessary.
In recognizing arguments and their structure, I score much higher—between a 4 and a 5. This element has to do with recognizing logical fallacies. Whether in advertising (where I seem to notice them the most) or in conversations with friends, logical fallacies abound. Recognizing and tracing them can be hard, but a little practice has made me much better able to see where an argument is weak and how to strengthen it.
Next, we have the construction of sound arguments. Following from the previous element, this item refers to how well I am capable of breaking down my thoughts, recognizing biases and assumptions, and making sure I do not make hasty conclusions. I rate myself a strong 4 in this element because I have become much better at constructing effective arguments that can be used to persuade others to take action. Finally, the element related to the evaluation of arguments. This element is also linked to the recognition of logical fallacies. I am still working on improving my understanding of logical fallacies, particularly with regard to naming them. I give myself a 4.5 on this element too.
