Setting Up Your Own Web Site

Setting Up Your Own Website

With the technological revolution of our era, the business community has boomed and expanded. Among its most notable achievements is the creation of a virtual business community, which sells to and interacts with customers, and most importantly, which retrieves considerable profits. Many of us may feel tempted to create our won website to sell our products / services. Before launching such an operation however, we should consider some features which characterize the online retailers.

In today's economy, it becomes more and more difficult to find a market with perfect competition. This is also valid for the online retailers, who present different sizes and variable market powers. Otherwise put, the concept of market competition refers to a situation in which prices are established based on demand and offer, and where all players are equal and have easy access to information. This is not the case in the virtual market; among the most eloquent examples in support of this finding stand the numerous internet monoliths, such as Amazon.com or eBay.com, which literally crush smaller competitors.

Another issue to be addresses is whether these non-conventional markets allow the calculation of conventional indices, which can be used to make better informed decisions or which allow an increased control over the operations handled. To best understand this aspect, take for instance the marginal cost and the marginal revenue. However they can be calculated, the difficulty lies in the new characteristics that have to be considered. For example, online retailers generally offer free shipping of the purchased products to the destination specified by the buyer. With an increase in the quantity sold, the marginal costs would increase not only with the expenses of manufacturing the item, but also with those of shipping it. The situation is similar in the case of the marginal revenue, making as such the indices more difficult to measure than in the cases of traditional retailers.

A third issue to consider is the actual effect these retailers have upon the national and global competition. In this instance, they are likely to generate competition at both levels. In terms of national territory, their threats will materialize in that they will offer lower prices in comparison to traditional retailers. This would be explained by the fact that online retailers register lower costs with the personnel, the training of the sales staff, or the rent of a facility. The competition is likely to be more intense at national level between small retailers as at this stage, they only afford to offer free shipping to the nearby locations. They would request their customers to pay the value of shipping to further locations, increasing therefore the retail price and losing their competitive edge.
