Sex Differences in Cognitive Abilities
Differences have always been enough for people to discriminate other people or simply to distinguish one from another. Gender differences are considered to be essential when concerning the abilities of women to perform certain things better than men, and the abilities that men have to perform certain activities better than women. In spite of the fact that women and men are very similar, the way that they think is partly influenced by their gender.
Differences are generally important because they stand as the main factors which have had an effect on evolution and on making people distinctive. People have analyzed differences even from the early ages and had observed that behavior is usually determined by some specific features which people have.
It would appear that women are generally better at expressing and understanding their emotions. In contrast, men are believed to be more practical and able to relate to logics when performing certain activities.
Having various skills is essential for someone wanting to thrive in the society, as people can usually receive credit for exploiting their skills. Apparently, women have an advantage when concerning the ability to perform better during a conversation. It is generally normal for women to have better language skills than men do.
Driving, for example, is considered by some to be more appropriate for men than it would be for women. One does not necessarily have to relate to a matter of discrimination when hearing that. Men are believed by scientists to have better visual-spatial skills, and, thus, men appear to be better at navigating.
There probably are certain people that might believe that men are not good at expressing emotions and that women are not good drivers. However, there have been several instances in which men have proved themselves to be excellent at expressing their emotions. There have also been numerous cases in which women displayed exceptional driving skills.
The subject has attracted abundant controversy, with some people being reluctant to want to study it even further. The respective people fear that in the quest to find differences, some can create opportunities for discrimination to thrive. Groups can consider differences to be enough to discriminate other groups and vice-versa. Women can consider that they are discriminated, or, they can discriminate men on the basis that men are bigots.
When taking intelligence into attention, there is virtually no difference between men and women, as both groups are capable of performing the same intellectual activities. Such performances can only be influenced by variables like one's age and his or her backgrounds.
According to Diane Halpern, social scientists are inclined to believe that men are more aggressive than women. Most violent crimes on the territory of the U.S. are being committed by men, with women having committed lesser aggression-related felonies. However, this does not necessarily mean that men are generally more aggressive than women. Apparently, men are usually more unpredictable than women are, as the number of men that have committed crimes is compensated by the number of men that are honest.
"Scientific studies "proving" that men are smarter or more analytical and less emotional than women, or that men and women use their brains differently, are periodically trumpeted and more quietly debunked." (Kaminer)
There have been a great number of statements in history relating to the differences existing between women and men. Women have been largely discriminated throughout history, and, most reports having taken place until the last centuries have related to men having several features which qualified them as being more intelligent. A number of scientists have claimed that men are smarter than women on the basis that the brains that men had were heavier than those that the women had.
Of course, this is an absurd theory, as one cannot merely judge someone else's intelligence by relating to the weight that his or her brains have. One of the main mistakes that scientists tend to make when making such assumptions is that they consider a difference to be equivalent to a deficit.
