Abstract

This project is a promotional flyer set for the Fifth Annual Fort Belvoir Sexual Assault Awareness 5k Run/Walk on April 5, 2013. It consists of the following events:1. Signing of Proclamation 0630 Run Start 0700 2. Sexual Assault Awareness Booths April 1, 2013 to April 20, 2013 All Events Start at 1130 and End at 1400 3. Free Self-Defense Classes 4/16 2 Classes: 1100 to 1400 and 1800 to 2000 Location: @ Warrior Combative Training Center (Building 1139 on Gunston Road); 4. Expert Instruction in five different self-defense styles and techniques Krav Maga * American Ju-Jitsu * Brazilian Ju-Jitsu * Modern Army Combatives * Judo; 5. Sexual abuse, exploitation, and harassment are serious problems in society and also within all branches of the U.S. Military. Regardless of where it occurs, sexualized violence affects victims, significant others, families, friends, coworkers, and entire communities. At least one in every six American women are victimized sexually and on average, someone is raped every two minutes in this country. The Annual Fort Belvoir Sexual Assault Awareness 5k Run/Walk is an important annual event that allows enlisted personnel, their families and friends, ad members of the entire local community show their support for victims of sexualized violence and promote increased understanding of the importance of all of the related issues.

Sexual Assault Awareness Booths

April 1, 2013 to April 20, 2013

All Events Start at 1130 and End at 1400

One of the most important features of the Annual Fort Belvoir Sexual Assault Awareness Month is the availability of information, tips sheets, and products available to help reduce the problem of sexualized assault in the military community and in American society more generally. The Sexual Assault Response Coordinators (SARC) and Victim Advocate (VA) will be available to answer questions, provide guidance, and to distribute SAAM literature and promote awareness of the resources available to help address the problem of sexualized violence and victimization. The scheduled location for the Sexual Assault Awareness Booths will be as follows:

4/1 @ Commissary 4/8 @ Hospital 4/15 @ Dining AAFES Main Exchange

4/22 @ Dining Facility

4/29 @ Community Center.

Free Self-Defense Classes

Self-defense and the ability to feel and project physical confidence are important components of the solution to the problem of sexual victimization. One of the opportunities available during the Annual Fort Belvoir Sexual Assault Awareness Month is expert instructional guidance from some of the same highly experienced self-defense instructors who train our troops to protect themselves with confidence, effectiveness, and maximum personal safety.

Sexual Assault Response Coordinators and Victim Advocate Appreciation

Location: The Army Community Service Building

Prevention through education, social support resources, and self-defense are vital components of any solution to the problem of sexual assault and victimization. However, when sexual assaults do occur, victims rely heavily on the support provided by Sexual Assault Response Coordinators (SARC) and Victim Advocates (VA). Accordingly, the Garrison Commander would like to honor the SARC and VA of the Fort Belvoir community for their outstanding service and their compassion in helping those who are affected by sexual assault and sexual victimization. Their work is essential for victims and their loved ones to recover from their experiences and overcome them. Please join Commander ____ and the rest of the Fort Belvoir community in acknowledging and thanking our dedicated SARC and VA personnel for their crucial work in this area and for helping victims recover and overcome their experiences as victims of sexual assault, victimization, and violence.

Take Back the Night

Location: The Woodlawn Village

One of the most important layers of the prevention of sexual assault by strangers is increasing the safety of our community environment. Please join our Take Back the Night event where three guest speakers will address the issues of community safety in connection with reducing sexual assault and victimization. The event will culminate with a "candlelight" (chemlights will be used for safety) march through the community together with military police support.

Subject Matter Expert Panel Discussion and Movie Presentation: Invisible War

Location: Thurman Hall Auditorium (Bldg 247)

As part of the ____ (SHARP) annual training, we will be presenting a panel of Subject Matter Experts (SME) including JAGs, CIDs, Victim Advocates, EEO personnel, the Provost Marshall, Victim Witness Liaisons, the Garrison Commander and the Chaplain. The free movie presentation of Invisible War will immediately follow the panel discussion and question & answer opportunity.
