Signs of Abuse and Best Practices

Last reviewed: September 28, 2014 ~4 min read

¶ … parameters given that the child is not being actively abused nor is the neglect on purpose. To be sure, the mother has an illness and the father is support all three of them. This leads to the child being observed now getting neglected due to lack of attention. However, there is no malice intended. This is probably a situation where the parents just need a helping hand in the form of bill money and money for the mother. If the mother could get assistance with her medications and her treatment, then the child would be cared for at a much higher level. That all being said, Child Protective Services and other relevant agencies need to be involved in the process as the neglect of the child needs to be stopped right now. While dirty clothes and unkempt appearance are not the end of the world, it is something that can lead to much worse and the parents probably just need some support. The involvement of CPS is an ethical guidelines because the child needs to be cared for at a certain level and the parents cannot do so at this time.

Unit Seven

Internships are very much a symbiotic relationship for students and companies. The companies get labor at a free or reduced rate and the students get to gain experience in a real-world company in their future line of work. For child care, an intern would be able to see the job up close and personal. It prepares the student for what they will need to do later and perhaps serves as a yardstick for whether they really want to do the job or not. The author will stick with the NAEYC conference already mentioned. It's going to be in Dallas and will include sessions for teachers, directors, college faculty and even students in the field.

Unit Eight

The author of this report chose New York for standards of abuse. The Office of Children and Family Services defines "Child Maltreatment" of lack of quality care for the child and/or the child is placed in imminent danger. If a parent fails to provide proper food, clothing, shelter, education or medical care when financially able to do so or the child is exposed to drug and/or alcohol use, then that would certainly meet the standards of something that needs to be reported to that agency (OCFS). Real world signs would be bruises or similar marks, dirty clothes and/or hair or other signs of bad hygiene, the child being excessively absent and so forth. Also important to react to would be any child's self-reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse or any form of neglect. Reporting for a child or acting for a child can take on several forms. Any person (some of whom are mandated reporters) can loop in the police and/or child protective service agencies and others still will act as an a guardian ad litem in court situations to voice for the child what they cannot voice for themselves (NYC, 2014).
