Simulation Business Plan There are two fuel pumps at a fuel station and pump 'A' serves all grades of petroleum including unleaded fuel and pump 'B' serves diesel fuel and all grades of petroleum EXCEPT unleaded fuel. For the purpose of this model, I had pump A just serve unleaded and pump B. serve diesel and regular fuel.
The instructions stated that 50% of the vehicles seek unleaded fuel, so I had them go to pump "A"; 20% of the vehicles wanted diesel fuel and the rest (which would be 30%) got regular fuel. For the purposes of this model, I then had the pumps divided into 50% for pump A (unleaded only) and 50% for pump B (20% diesel and 30% regular fuel).
Granted this model only used 15 cars, so it made it easier to do it this way, if you were doing a regular days's worth or week's worth of vehicles which would be in the hundreds or thousands, it would be different and there would be more waiting time. However, since this only used 15 cars, I could have them go to pump A, then pump B. And then back to pump A, and therefore there was no wait time.
Also, I was doing this by hand and if you were doing this as a real model with hundreds or thousands of cars, you would need to set up a spreadsheet to calculate the actual times people are at the pump, etc.
As you probably know from experience, it is rare that you don't have to wait to fill your vehicle up with gas and I don't know of anyone who is just there for 3 minutes at a time, even with the added benefit of paying at the pump so you don't have to go inside the store to pay for your gas.
