The modern workplace is characterized with the increased use of social media as a means of communication between individuals. Social media is a broad term used to refer to Internet-based tools or sites that enable people to make and remain in contact as well as interact. As the impact of social media on the workplace is increasing because of the pervasiveness of its use, it is increasingly affecting communications among employers, employees, and job applicants. Moreover, the use of social media in the workplace is affecting how companies promote and manage their reputation and how various stakeholders in the working environment are treating each other. While the increased use of social media in the workplace presents new opportunities, it has raised numerous concerns and questions in relation to its impact on employee and organizational productivity. Actually, recent statistics show that more than 50% of United States employers are blocking access to social media at the workplace. This research will examine how social media is being used in the workplace, its impact, and the best approach for employers to take in handling its use.

Regardless of these benefits and opportunities, a huge portion of employers are blocking its use. This research project will demonstrate why blocking social media is a costly process that does not yield desired results to employers and managers and why its use doesn't necessarily generate adverse effects on organizational productivity.
Scope: In order to critically evaluate or discuss the research topic, I will examine the recent trends in the use of social media in the workplace given that it has become pervasive in the contemporary working environment. This will be followed by an evaluation of the effects of this trend in the workplace. In this case, I will specifically focus on the impact of social media on employee and organizational productivity. The evaluation will be followed by a discussion of the recent trends by employers to block the use of social media in the workplace as a means of ensuring that employees spend their time doing their job.
