Coffee Shop Social Interactions
For this assignment, I chose to observe social interactions at my local coffee shop. I spent approximately three hours there on a Sunday afternoon, at peak time when the coffee shop was busy with activity. I selected this setting because coffee shops often serve as a microcosm of society, where various social behaviors can be observed.
Throughout my observation, I noticed a variety of interactions. There were groups of friends catching up, individuals engrossed in their laptops or phones, or even books, and couples sharing intimate conversations. A few behaviors that stood out to me included non-verbal cues, territorial behavior, and social norms and etiquette. For instance, many people used non-verbal cues to communicate: a nod to acknowledge someone entering, a wave to call the barista\'s attention, or a smile between strangers who were doing something friendly like holding a door open. I saw territorial behavior as well among people who came to work or study: they marked their territory with their belongings by spreading out their materials, perhaps as a way to claim space and deter others from sitting too close. As for social norms and etiquette, there was an unspoken queue system. Even though there was no clear line, people seemed to know who came before them and waited their turn. Or, people lowered their voices during personal conversations, respecting the shared public space by trying to be quiet.
