The film “Bully” is an American documentary about bullying within the United States. It made it debut in 2011 and was received well by many audiences through the country. The film follows the lives of 5 student in the United States who were bullied on a daily basis. The film details the harassment and ultimately, the resulting implications of consistent bullying on their lives. Tyler, a character in the film was particularly touching story. The film depicts him being bullied. The film details incidents where his clothes were takin while he was showering, being forced to leave the looker room naked. In other cased the film depicts incidents where he shoved in lockers and even verbally abused. This ultimately led to Tyler committing suicide at the age of 17. His father found him hanging from a closet.
Kelby is a unique situation in which bullying is a result of sexual orientation. Here, Kelby was victim not only within her school but her hometown. The video depicts her struggles as a lesbian with both her school and her hometown. For example, Kelby recalls times where a minivan full of boys attempted to run her over while she was crossing the street. She even admits to attempting suicide at least three times in her life due to the harassment and abuse by others in society. Even her teachers were involved in the bully and even went so far as to exclude her from events. Kelby showed her resolve in the film by refusing to move and continuing to fight the biases, harassment, and abuse of others in her community. What makes this so appalling is that both adults and students with the community where involved in the bully. This makes it much more difficult to endure as sure is constantly pressured with abuse and harassment outside of the school setting.
A relation of the film to course material (social inequalities) (at least one page)
As it relates to the course material, social inequalities exist throughout society which impact others in adverse ways. These recent in many aspects of society. For example, African Americans must deal with social inequalities from an economic and personal level. From an economic level minority must deal with biases related to their overall intelligence and ability to perform a task. Many in society believed that African Americans are inferior to their white and Asian counterparts which isn’t true. Many others believe that minorities are only great at athletics and intellectual tasks are often beyond them. This again is not true, but people believe in these racist social inequalities. Women too much fight for equal pay and better leadership representation. Although these elements have improved, they are far from perfect. They reflect a society in which, people believe that white men where the superior beings. Even the settlers under the term “Manifest Destiny” used religion as a means to murder millions of indigenous native Americans while also enslaving millions of African Americans. They used their position of power to make a society that benefits white America at the expense of many other racial groups. Over the centuries these social inequalities continue to persist as white American’s are now attempted to restrict voting rights for many minorities. In states such as Georgia, they are even prohibiting people from handing out water to voters standing in line. This is used to exacerbate many of the social inequalities currently in society today. They are designed to keep particular people and social group in power while inhibiting the progress of others, particularly minorities and women (Bacchini, 2009).
