Last reviewed: October 30, 2011 ~4 min read

¶ … nuclear weapons, as they relate to United States history. It will begin by first examining the circumstances surrounding the development of fissile materials, and will continue by speaking about the Second World War, as well as what prompted the U.S. - Germany - Russia race for developing nuclear weapons. Then, the paper will also examine lasting effects of the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and will comment upon the influence that nuclear weapons issues have on foreign policy as well as how much harm they could cause today, and how the world can and should stop these weapons from existing in the world. With regards to this latter point, the paper will have to examine a short chronology of the development of these weapons and will therefore include those countries that are utilizing such technologies today, as well as how the U.S. sees these countries and what policies are in place to ensure global safety.

One of the primary sources that could help with researching the above-stated, and complex topic, could be found on a U.S. Government site. This source is the history of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a brief article detailing the necessity of the U.S. Government to finally step in and regulate nuclear weapons, and their dismantling. The NNSA, on the same website, provides details as to how it is responsible for the security of nuclear weapons in this nation, as well as their non-proliferation. The source, since it is governmental, is legitimate, and it is wholly relevant to the subject matter at hand. The fact that this source is governmental also made its verification into quite an easy process. Despite its many strengths, such as the fact that the NNSA is a very credible source with a lot of information, especially useful information for all parts of the topic described above, the NNSA does not truly relate U.S. nuclear weapons' issues to those around the world. Thus, another source is necessary.

A secondary source could thus relate to describing a more international opinion of nuclear proliferation, and could focus, for instance, on the developments of nuclear weapons in unstable countries, such as Iran and North Korea, which pose many dangers to the world's safety. For this, one could utilize a Telegraph (UK) article, that is a verifiable secondary source. This source speaks about the relation between North Korea and Iran's programs and how they can relate to how these programs affect worldwide safety. For instance, this source describes that "North Korea is helping Iran to prepare an underground nuclear test similar to the one in Pyongyang carried out last year." Since this article speaks about topics related above, it is relevant. Furthermore, the source, a respected British journal, is verifiable and credible. Furthermore, the Telegraph has may other advantages, such as the fact that one can utilize it to research some more on the topic. It also helps put the primary source described above in context, in the sense that it gives a more global perspective on the issue.
