It is with great pride that I introduce to you, citizens of Bilby, the plans for a brand new, state-of-the-art medical facility. As your mayor, I represent each and every one of you. Each voice in Bilby counts. Therefore, I am here today to answer any and all questions you may have related to this new health care facility. I understand that many of you are concerned about the location of the hospital, due to the original proposal that it be built on cemetery grounds. After consulting with our land development council, we have found a suitable location that does not in any way, shape, or form infringe upon the graveyard. We Bilby residents are known for our commitment to historical preservation and pride. The plans for the future need not conflict with the dreams laid by our forefathers and mothers. In fact, it is precisely their dreams and visions that brought us to the place of peace and progress that we enjoy today. We have the opportunity to develop a medical center worthy of the entire province because of the blood, sweat, and tears poured out by our ancestors. They would be proud to see how far Bilby has come. Moreover, our ancestors would marvel at the way medical technologies have changed our life expectancy and our approach to health and wellness.

It is in the spirit of preserving the past while progressing towards the future that we aim to provide Bilby residents with a new hospital. The name of the hospital has yet to be decided upon and we will be taking input from you, town members, at a future date. For now, allow me to explain what the hospital plans are, what they entail for our community, and what you can expect. For one, Bilby's Bush hospital capacity is totally over-stretched, as you know. The emergency room is continually overcrowded and we cannot even support new nursing staff because of the lack of facilities we provide. The new hospital is absolutely necessary. Our community is growing. We cannot afford to rely on outmoded facilities in a hospital with insufficient beds. Our runoff is handled by the Bendalong Regional Hospital but we cannot continue imposing our public health burdens on them. I urge you Bilby residents to think about the future of our community, and what your children have to look forward to in terms of a brand new health care facility. Thank you for your time.

Letter to the Editor

This letter is in response to the Mayor's recent speech detailing the plans for the new hospital. Last year I was in a car accident. I was rushed to Bush Hospital here in Bilby. Although the nursing staff did everything they could to help, I had major complications with my surgery because Bush is severely understaffed. Having experienced first hand the need for an improved medical facility in our town, I urge your readers to reconsider their opposition to the new hospital.
