MEMO: Comparing my existing resume with a description for an internship

COMPARISON OF RESUME TO INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

In the first place my "Objective" is presented as a way to get into football coaching where I can also serve as a mentor for players; it does not include any suggestion vis-a-vis becoming involved in "sports management" per se, but. My objective is fairly narrow and because I am seriously contemplating an internship with an agency like the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission's (CRSC) Internship Program I will need to expand my objective to include a desire to immerse myself from the ground up in a sports management internship that offers practical, hands-on management experience for a variety of tasks and skills associated with an internship.

JOB DESCRIPTION (CRSC)

The Charlotte Regional Sports Commission presented the duties and responsibilities for the internship in bulleted form. The intern that is selected is expected to do the following:

Become thoroughly involved in "strategic planning, marketing, operations and overall coordination of all CRSC functions"

Conduct research and create proposals for "new event ideas and recommendations"

Research all available grant monies -- along with other fundraising opportunities

Write a newsletter ("Insider Stuff"); produce "Weekend Updates" reporting on all sports-related activities for CRSC; created email marketing "blasts"

Be able to design brochures, write press releases and prepare marketing materials

"Complete one major, mutually beneficial research project…"

Become an effective assistant to the CRSC board: a) keep board minutes; b) schedule conference rooms and inform members of time, date and place; c) prepare "information packets" and agendas; d) arrange for refreshments

Become efficient at office management duties: a) handle all correspondence; b) schedule all staff travel; c) keep accurate databases including information on board members, team players and other contacts; and d) keep an accurate inventory on office supplies (postage, etc.).

IDENTIFIABLE GAPS IN MY RESUME

I have certain basic computer skills and I am now finishing my third year at North Carolina State University (I expect to graduate in May 2014), but my experience to date includes part-time work as a "cart puller" and "package handler" at a Wal-Mart in Morehead City. This was just a three-month-summer job and although I was very efficient and helpful none of the tasks I performed at Wal-Mart relate to what will be expected of me at CRSC, should I be accepted. In addition, I have had some impressive sports accomplishments on the field of competition, which I hope will show those making the selection that I understand the culture of sports competition.

STRATEGIES TO CLOSE THE GAPS

Besides listing the football awards I received (All Conference; All Area; Defensive Lineman of the Year), I need to recount some of the skills I learned in high school (typing, public relations in the community and marketing efforts on behalf of the Associated Student Body), some of the office duties I performed at New Mexico Military Institute (writing reports on activities; keeping schedules for my platoon), as well as the ability to meet deadlines.
