Moral Development Do You Think

Last reviewed: November 8, 2009 ~3 min read

¶ … moral development do you think you are personally at and why?

I would 'rate' myself as mostly functioning at a Stage 5 of moral development. I am able to question social values as well as see the value in having a harmonious society. I think a good example of this is how I am able to step away from the moral system of my friends and criticize the point-of-view of my peer group. Many of my peers are interested in getting a good job and are focused on acquiring more material goods, but I do not think that fulfillment is possible without having work that is personally enriching. I want to make some sort of contribution that improves the world as well as supports myself and my family. Sometimes, I find myself standing apart from my friend's opinions and having to take an unpopular political stance, upon principle, even if this is in conflict with the rest of the group.

I do not think I function at Stage 6, and always use universal principles to guide my actions. For example, I believe in showing tolerance to all human beings, and treating others as one would wish to be treated one's self, but if I am in traffic, I am often less charitable to the people driving the cars around me than I would like to be treated, if I were in their position!

Q2. What stage of moral development best reflects the organizational culture of the company for which you work, and why do you think this is true? Provide a few examples if you can to support your analysis.

Stage 4. While not unethical, my organization places a strong emphasis on workers following rules and standard operating procedures. It seldom asks for advice from employees about how to improve efficiency. It encourages employees to work in teams harmoniously, not to rock the boat, and to follow the 'company line.'

Q3. Is your stage of moral development in conflict with your company's stage of moral development; that is, are your ethical beliefs aligned with the organizational culture in which you work? Explain. If not, you may be suffering from a condition referred to as moral stress.
