¶ … Vide game players spend a lot of time figuring out complex entertainment systems and mastering various entertainment games. To someone who has never tried to play a video game, these games can seem very difficult, and yet often, young children are capable of figuring out how to play a game without any adult assistance. This study was designed to determine whether or not avid video game players have a higher IQ than the general population.

Participants recruited from a popular video game website were asked to complete an online IQ test. The score that each participant received on their IQ test was recorded. The data as a whole was then compared to the average IQ, which is known to be 100.

Data:

The only data collected was the final IQ score for each participant.

Analysis:

A total of 31 individuals completed the IQ test online. The average IQ score (or the Mean) for the group was 129.25, with a standard deviation of 11.86 and a range of 48, going from 108 to 156. The midpoint, or 50th percentile was 130, very close to the mean. Thus, all of the measures of central tendency for this group hung very closely together. The graph below shows the distribution of scores for the sample.

Conclusion:

The results of the one-sample t-test indicate that the average IQ for the group of video game players is significantly different than the average IQ of the general population, which is known to be 100, t (30) = 13.75, p < .000. Ho: Mean IQ = 100. The mean difference of the sample from the test value of 100 (the average of the general population) was 29.25, with confidence intervals of 24.9 and 33.6, indicating that there is a 95% level of certainty that the true mean difference lies between these two numbers.

Alternate Hypothesis

Ha: Mean IQ > 100

Level of significance: .05

This is a one-tailed test because our hypothesis has a built in direction (we are hypothesizing that the average IQ of the group of video game players will be higher than the average IQ of the general population).

Z Score = X -- X

S

Z Score = 129.25 -- 100 / 11.86

Z Score = 2.4 -- thus, the average of the data set has a Z score of 2.4
