An Exercise in Artistic Observation: An Encounter and Indecent Exposure

1. What is the story of the encounter in each incident in other words, what do you think the real experience might have been to make the boys run away from and the woman to run after these men?

The experience in each is sexual in nature: the man in An Encounter is obviously deriving sexual pleasure from his dirty talk with the young lads, and the public nudist in Indecent Exposure is looking for attention for some kind of sexual pleasure. …memories other than one of a film I saw years back called Observe and Report, in which a mall cop is trying to catch a man who goes around exposing himself to women at the mall. It was played for laughs like in the poem. So I wonder if there is something about that kind of exposure, in which there is no attempt to rape or seduce but only to get people to look, that makes for good comedy. It is certainly nothing comedic in Joyces story. In fact Joyces story is sad rather than funny, while Moffetts poem is funny rather than sad or frightening. Open Boat Stephen Crane's short story "The Open Boat" is very much "open" to interpretation. The story revolving around four men on a small boat braving a raging sea in hopes to save themselves from death points to many interesting comparisons and deep symbolism. The purpose of this essay is to examine the five main characters of this story and how they collectively represent something more than the sum of their

In "Piaf," Pam Gems provides a view into the life of the great French singer and arguably the greatest singer of her generation -- Edith Piaf. (Fildier and Primack, 1981), the slices that the playwright provides, more than adequately trace her life. Edith was born a waif on the streets of Paris (literally under a lamp-post). Abandoned by her parents -- a drunken street singer for a mother and a

and, fundamentally, More's choice was the right one, not because he ascribed to any of these moral beliefs, but because he attempted to remain true to himself. Although utilitarianism may provide us with the tools to actually make choices in most situations, these choices would not satisfy the moral demands of most individuals. Meanwhile, attempting to live life by a finite set of rules can often leave individuals in
