Green Pet Store
For any business, it is important to have a mission and/or vision, because these will set the firm's strategic direction. The mission statement lets the stakeholders know why the company exists (Khatib, 2008). The vision statement provides a vision of the future that can guide the company's actions. These both tie into the strategy of the company. For example, the pet food store that focuses on green pet supplies should have a vision and mission that reflects on the company's role in the pet food industry.
The mission statement for the company will be "To market ethical pet supplies, allowing people to promote their personal values through their pets." A good vision statement might be "To become the world's largest ethical pet supplies retailer." The business strategy is to market ethical pet products to the mainstream audience in the United States. The company would be differentiated from its major competitors, and would therefore earn higher margins on its products because these products are ethically produced, and that gives the buyers a greater sense of personal satisfaction.
As an ethical pet supply store, the "green" aspect of the business is a guiding principle. At all stages of the business, the company aspires to being the most ethical company in the industry. This includes areas of hiring, sourcing our goods, supporting local producers, using organic and recycled material wherever possible and developing the most efficient supply chain possible. It is desirable that the company builds its ethics into the corporate culture. This provides a mechanism by which the company's employees hold themselves accountable, because they will understand the importance of ethics to the company and this will help them to make more ethical decisions. The company can only be sure that its employees will always make the right ethical decision if high standards are built into the corporate culture -- and it is believed that companies with better ethical standards will enjoy superior results in the long run (Maharaj, 2011).
Social responsibility is going to be one of the guiding principles of the business. The company is opposed to seeing its actions create adverse outcomes for anybody, human or animal, and opposed as well to creating adverse outcomes for the environment. The company needs to occupy the ethical high ground in order to differentiate itself from its competitors. This means equality of opportunity for all, donations to charities, ensuring that local suppliers are given preference and ensuring that all products are ethically produced and ethically sourced. By doing this, the company feels that it will attract customers who share these values.
