Student Success
Learning, at whatever stage of life is predominantly dependent on the level of self-determination and motivation. The individual may posses al the characteristics of a student or learner but if they are not motivated then it would be absolutely impossible to forge ahead with their education. One cannot force another to succeed in school. In the given case studies, the student who is likely to forge ahead and succeed in education is Javier. This is bearing the fact that he is an adult learner, he is self-motivated and draws from his past experience to forge ahead and pursue his education. The fact that he left school at 16 years to mind the family business and still has managed to get back to school at the advanced age to pursue his passion on finance and accenting is motivation enough to ensure that he succeeds in whatever he does. The other aspect that makes Javier to stand out as a possible successful student is the fact he works extensive number of hours, well above the average number of hours per week and still he has never compromised his class work is enough indication that he is determined to see his academic pursuit comes to a successful end despite the odds. All he needs is the help of an education counsellor or career expert to keep encouraging him and make it clear to him that he is on right path in his academics and that he shall make it if he maintains his trend.
The student that will be picked for the encouragement and training for the ultimate success is Glenda (31).This is a lady who knows what she really wants to become in the near future, a health educator. She seems motivated in life and determined in her education and the only impediment has been the financial aspect, having solved that through the financial aid she received, there seems to be another obstacle of taking care of her two small children. There are several measures that Glenda needs to undertake; first she needs to find a small job that would require a few hours per day, say hours that would cater for the money need to take the two children to a care center which would be the cheapest option as compared to having a person babysit for her at home. This will help solve the issue of where to leave her children during the day when she is at work. She will also need to set up a home study station that would be instrumental in her ensuring that she handles her course work almost at the same time as looking after the children in the house. She also needs to have a clearly drafted schedule of activities that will help her plan her days as she will be having short days bearing that she has to work and at the same time study and take care of family needs. There is also need to split some of her course work into the online classes whenever possible so that she can have a flexible schedule on these classes and some extra time in her hands to do other things that are demanded of her. Glenda needs to constantly draw from her experience of the family burden and the passion for her future as a health educator to keep her going in her pursuit of academic journey to the successful end.
