Philippe Stark Biography of Philippe Stark

Philippe Stark was born in Paris in 1949 the son of an aircraft designer (Designboom.com). Starck spent his childhood under his father's drawing boards, sawing, cutting, gluing, and sanding, dismantling bikes, motorcycles and other objects (Designboom.com). He attended the Ecole Nissim de Camondo in Paris and he set up his first company in 1968 to produce inflatable objects (Designboom.com). In the 1970s he fitted out the Paris night-clubs La Main Bleue (1976) and Les Bains-Douches (1978) and decorated a suite in the Elysee Palace in Paris in 1982 for French president Francois Mitterand (Designboom.com). Starck has worked independently as an interior designer and as a product designer since 1975 ("Philippe Stark"). Since then he has reached a phenomenal international reputation in hotel interiors, furniture design and domestic products (Designboom.com). Not limited to any particular medium, Stark has also designed a number of private dwelling houses and apartment blocks, commercial premises (Designboom.com).

The New Style incorporates the main tenets of modernism, including form follows function, simplification of design or elimination of unnecessary detail and the adoption of a machine aesthetic (Allmodern.com). Starck's work does not concentrate on the creation of provocative and expensive single pieces. Instead, they are useful, functional, stylized, streamlined and aesthetically organic household items. Starck also loves to employ the intertwining of unusual material combinations in the construction of his pieces, such as glass and stone or plush fabrics and chrome. The proportions of the furniture in the room give balance to the space.
III. The Space

The Fasano Hotel room has two distinct spaces created by the headboard and desk combination which mixes colors and textures including leather, glass, wood and metal.
