Morae software: Who produces it? What is its purpose in terms of systems development? What are some examples of the type of information it captures? How could a company use this information?
TechSmith is a leading provider of screen capture and recording software who has successfully transition into a variety of products based in their core strengths in this area. Their Morae software suite is based on three components including the Morae Recorder, Morae Remote Viewer and Morae Manager. The system as designed is well suited for usability analysis and testing yet could have more robust analytics functionality (Powell, 2005). This system captures how users interact with a Web page, specifically concentrating on how screen recording and capture methods can accelerate new product development. The company's flagship products include Snaglt and Camtasia products. Development teams would use this data to better manage the new product development process from a usability standpoint. The systems also include data translation functionality, yet reviewers would like to see more done in this area for interpolating results directly into analytical feedback that could be used in defining feature enhancements for customers of this system (Powell, 2005).
2. Explain what is meant by: (a) an eye tracking "heat map"; and (b) an F-shaped pattern with respect to using a website. What are the implications of these concepts for website design?
An eye tracking heat map shows graphically what elements a person visiting a Web page looks at first. Heat maps are very useful for determining the prioritization of features and options on a given Web page, in addition to how best to manage the many variations in design options for best results. These are also critically important for creating an effective series of navigational options on a Web page as well. Heat maps can also be used for testing entire website template decisions including their use as a part of a broader Website strategy.
The F-shaped pattern with respect to using a website determines how visitors traverse the many areas of a webpage. This concept says that visitors to a website will most often view the two horizontal stripes of the content (whether text or video) first and then follow a vertical stripe of viewing. The implications of the F. pattern are that users don't read text thoroughly, in fact they skip over it and rarely if ever go word for word through a website. The first two paragraphs of a website are often the only ones that get read. If a website is trying to convey important information the subheads, paragraphs and bullet points matter the most.
3. Find a list of worst websites. Identify the list you used, its name and URL. Select an example of one website that is considered "bad" by this source and explain why the source said it is bad. Why specifically do you think this site is "good" or "bad"?
